Senior Plastics Design Engineer

We’re looking for a Senior Plastics Design Engineer to join our Engineering & Quality team to assist with product development, product sustaining, tooling design reviews, and generation of engineering drawings for manufacturing, and mold qualifications.
You’ll report to The Engineering & Quality Manager and work from our Santa Ana, CA office and warehouses.
What You’ll Do:
New Product Development
- Develop detailed designs for plastic parts based on needs from Product Management and Manufacturing
- Develop drawings for production parts and assemblies for tooling design and quality inspection
- Lead product development projects with cross-functional teams including Quality, Purchasing, Manufacturing, and Product Management
- Lead product design reviews with cross-functional teams
- Participate in mold qualifications and tooling design reviews with vendors to ensure quality product launches
- Mentor team members on design and tooling approaches
Sustaining
- Analyze legacy part designs to identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement
- Improve existing designs for better functionality, ease of manufacturing, or to address quality issues
- Review non-conformances with Quality and determine root causes and actions to prevent recurrence
- Identify opportunities for product improvements
Testing
- Perform testing on sample parts and assemblies and generate associated reports
- Inspect parts for dimensional and other physical attributes
- Perform other duties as assigned
Who You Are:
To perform the job successfully, the Senior Plastics Design Engineer should demonstrate the following:
- Hold a 4-year Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial Design, or similar Engineering degree
- Several years’ experience in plastics, injection molding, and tool design
- Strong understanding of engineering software tools, e.g. SolidWorks (or similar CAD tools)
- Advanced Microsoft Excel or similar skills
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Able to work with a cross-functional team
- Takes direction well
- Attention to detail
- Ability to work in a deadline sensitive environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
Physical Requirements:
- Sitting or standing for extended periods of time
- Extended periods of time in office and warehouse settings, both at Collector’s Universe and at vendors
- Hearing and vision within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, e-mail correspondences, to receive ordinary information, and to prepare, inspect, and receive submissions.
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 20lbs
- Working around equipment and machinery
- Occasional exposure to machinery noise from forklifts, injection presses, and other machinery
- Occasional exposure to warehouse temperatures and humidity
