As a Materials Print Engineer, you will be at the forefront of expanding the capabilities of Markforged 3D printing systems. You will continuously improve our existing FFF material set and bring new FFF materials through development, qualification and out into the market. To do this you will use your materials know-how to look at structure-process-property relationships, develop materials printing profiles, run varieties of print testings, and modify materials or other print system components to optimize result. Perhaps you will end up tweaking software algorithms, changing the rheology of the filaments or modifying the printer motions to get the perfect parts. You will work directly with a team of materials scientists, print engineers, hardware engineers and software engineers and contribute to a collaborative and productive work environment. This role will be mainly focused on the composite side of our business.

What will you own?

  • Lead the design and improvement of composite printing processes to achieve desirable performances and meet demanding application needs
  • Lead the design of print test suites, test methods and statistically meaningful analysis methods for composite printing materials
  • Lead new materials development efforts including formulation, processing, and print system integration
  • Perform experiments and use results to inform and develop improvements in materials, software, and/or hardware for better properties, robustness, and reliability
  • Make hypotheses and test them in multiple ways
  • Root cause 3D printing phenomena
  • Maintain and further develop materials printing know-hows for the company
  • Effectively document, summarize and present findings
  • Comply with safety and protective equipment regulations

Important Note:

Although we list out what we generally look for, we are very likely missing other attributes and skills that you have that could make you a great fit, but are not currently listed. Research has shown this especially applies to women and other marginalized groups, who tend to apply if they check 100% of every box, versus men who apply if they hit roughly 60%. The point we’re getting at, it doesn’t hurt to take a chance and apply!

What you have:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Plastic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related; advanced degree preferred
  • Strong practical and theoretical knowledge of polymers, polymer composites, plastics/composites processing, and plastics/composites applications
  • 5+ years of combined experience (industrial and advanced education) in a materials engineering, product development, applications development, or 3D printing system development position
  • Extensive hands-on experience designing and tuning materials fabrication/forming processes, or building test equipment and developing test methods
  • Familiarity with continuous fiber reinforced composites a strong plus, particularly their fabrication , characterizations, and structure-property relationships
  • Strong sense of ownership and strong attention to detail
  • Creative problem solver with a can-do attitude
