As the Senior Manager of this team, you are expected to staff, lead, grow and develop groups of engineers focused on specifying and verifying driving behaviors for autonomous vehicles. These Systems Engineers work across Cruise on end-to-end system design. They provide the specific analysis, tools, and translation of requirements into a form that is easily consumed by the engineers who design and build these systems. In addition, you are expected to play a direct and strong role as a technology leader: inventing solutions, defining technical strategies and development methods that accelerate development and scale with the complexity of the driving environment. You will work across Cruise to make strategic decisions and guide the engineering execution on key initiatives.
- Hire, mentor, and motivate exceptional teams of engineers responsible for decomposing the top-level system functions, behaviors and features into a set of functional requirements that specify the expected end-to-end system behavior
- Collaborate with your teams, Product, Program, Legal, Engineering, Test and technical leadership to plan and execute engineering roadmaps and deliver products on time
- Develop and maintain clear development pipelines, workflows and dashboards for these functions, and partner closely with the development teams on the most effective way to engineer driving behaviors in a continuous development and release environment
- Work with Cruise technical leadership to set and propagate best-in-class engineering development and management practices within your teams
- Define and measure the output goals and important metrics your teams will use to measure success
- Be a culture leader within Cruise, exemplifying our values and maintaining sharp focus on our mission
- Possess a creative problem solving and continuous improvement attitude which leaves everything you touch better that it was before
- Interface with product teams and engineering teams to prioritize tasks, supervise and manage key projects, and allocate resources for most efficient execution of company wide initiatives.
What you must have:
- BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Robotics or another related field
- Ability to lead with multi-functional communication and collaboration skills
- 2+ years experience managing 2+ engineering teams of ~ 3 to 8 engineers each
- 3+ years of experience as a hiring manager, recruiting and retaining the best talent
- 5+ years of industry experience in managing systems engineering teams who build and support complex technical systems
- 10+ years experience in system engineering and requirements management including system analysis, requirements authoring, test generation, and validation activities
- Ability to learn quickly, starting with little information and quickly becoming a specialist in your domain
- Ability to understand complex technical systems and dive deep
- Proven track record of successful systems engineering for a safety-critical product
- Prior experience in the autonomous vehicle industry, especially an understanding of specifying and developing vehicle features and behaviors
- Experience with fast-growth companies and recruiting/retaining the best talent
