Opportunity Overview

TuSimple is currently seeking an experienced Senior Manager of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to strengthen our Systems Engineering infrastructure and accelerate our development processes. The Senior Manager will lead a team of experienced Systems Engineers and Architects, and will build a rigorous MBSE capability that facilitates rapid scaling of our already fast-growing business. This is a highly visible role, working across the entire TuSimple organization. The role includes strong cross-functional collaboration with Product, Quality, Operations, PMO, and Engineering leadership, to develop & deploy a high-reliability Systems Engineering lifecycle for the entire business. This Senior Manager will report directly to the VP of Systems Engineering & Test, and will extend our engineering process infrastructure  to enable robust MBSE and Model-Based Design (MBD), with bi-directional traceability from Product Requirements to Validation. Given the extreme safety-criticality of autonomous freight applications, the MBSE infrastructure will form the safety-critical  backbone of our Engineering operations, and will support continuous improvement of our agile development methodologies. This role will also work closely with our OEM and contracting partners, including Traton and Navistar, to ensure efficient alignment of our development processes and MBSE infrastructure across corporate boundaries.

Role Responsibilities

• Lead the team responsible for delivery of MBSE artifacts for all TuSimple autonomous trucking applications, including SysML/UML models of ConOps & Requirements, Architecture models, and GSN trees for the Safety Case Framework.
• Act as a deep subject matter expert on all aspects of model-based systems engineering, including developing appropriately tailored simulation & analysis methods to generate robust requirements for defensive driving and other complex autonomy behaviors.
• Own selection and institutionalization of all Engineering tools and processes necessary to provide bi-directional traceability of product requirements through to validated products
• Responsible for end-to-end Systems Engineering process connectivity across the design lifecycle, including documentation, workflow automation, and development efficiency measurement
• Primary custodian of the requirements management toolchain and of the artifacts stored within it, including all ConOps, Requirements, Functional, Logical & Physical Architectures, ICDs and any linked material that supports the safety and assurance case for TuSimple’s products
• Work closely with Software and Hardware engineering leadership to ensure tight connectivity and alignment with the overall system architecture and application intent
• Hire, develop and retain strong talent, building a state-of-the-art MBSE capability that maximizes design reuse, reduces refactoring across applications, and accelerates development
• Identify broader MBSE needs and evangelize increased use of model-based design and verification methods to ensure TuSimple accomplishes its key business objectives

Experience & Skills Required

• 10 years of experience in MBSE, including experience using MBSE in highly-regulated safety-critical industries like Automotive, Aerospace & Defense, or Medical Robotics
• Bachelor’s degree in Systems , Control, Software, Electrical, Robotics, or a related Engineering field
• Deep competence in at least one core robotics and autonomy discipline, especially systems control, embedded software, or artificial intelligence & machine learning (AI/ML)
• Experience customizing system-level architectural frameworks, including TOGAF, DoDAF, MoDAF, Arcadia or other system-of-systems frameworks, to align with application and organizational needs
• Experience with design and development of complex autonomous, mechatronic or robotic systems.
• Demonstrated ability to develop, document & institutionalize new engineering tools & processes
• Proven ability to develop safety-critical requirements, architectures and tests using MBSE methods
• Deep understanding of the MBSE toolchain including UML/SysML modeling tools like Cameo, MagicDraw, Enterprise Architect, Rhapsody or equivalent offerings
• Experience customizing and deploying requirements management tools across a large matrixed engineering organization, using DOORS, Contour, Jama or equivalent integrated tools
• Hands-on experience integrating Hazard & Risk Analysis, fault trees, Failure Mode & Effect Analysis (FMEA), and other Safety-centric methodologies into the MBSE toolchain
• Embedded software development experience in an MBSE-centric framework, including use of autocode tools like Matlab-Simulink, Rhapsody in C, or similar code generators to accelerate coding
  

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Master’s degree in Systems Engineering or Control Engineering
• Ph.D. in robotics, mechatronics or other automation-centric field, including Control Engineering, Software Engineering, or Robotics
• Strong team-building skills to support the rapid growth of the MBSE function
• Strong communication & change management skills to accelerate MBSE adoption across TuSimple
• MBSE or Systems Engineering Leadership experience at the Senior Management level or above
• Experience integrating optimization-based methodologies into architecture design and analysis

Bonus Points (optional section)

• Automotive industry engineering experience, with a Level 2+ autonomous vehicle developer
• Understanding of ISO 21448, ISO26262, DO-178B/C, or ARP4761 safety-critical system standards
• Ability to write, review or functionally understand implemented C++ and/or Python code
