The Mainframe & Data Center Infrastructure organization engineers, operates, and supports highly available and scalable infrastructures at the firm level, which includes mainframe and middleware systems, database operations, data centers and security services.

The Senior Infrastructure Engineer I will lead the engineering and design of critical American Express mainframe applications and infrastructure in conjunction with troubleshooting, tuning and debugging of applications and databases applying the mainframe platform and will report directly to the Engineering Director for Mainframe Product Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Engineering large/complex projects with a variety of components and integration points with a specialty in Db2 and MQ on z/OS
  • Interact with business and vendor partners to better understand their objectives, technical landscape and/or how to identify and solve complex problems/issues
  • Interact with Infrastructure and Application Engineers and Architects to exploit modern mainframe technologies such as, zOSMF, ZOWE, Java, Encryption, Sysplex, Hybrid Cloud, High Availability, Active/Active and mainframe networking
  • Work with Engineers to define solution requirements, perform coding and/or hands-on technical implementation
  • Conduct infrastructure performance and security assessments
  • Provide internal analysis and support to ensure proper customer concern during outages or periods of degraded system performance
  • Participate in brainstorming and discovery exercises to resolve new technologies based on research, proof of concept efforts and independent investigation
  • Ensure engineering is consistent with firm engineering standards, guidelines and principles
  • Actively participate in team architecture and engineering discussions and forums as a prominent contributor
  • Employs technical expertise to help team members overcome technical problems during production outages and solution delivery
  • Ensures compliance with technical, architectural, regulatory, and strategic standards, policies, and procedures
  • Actively modernizes platforms and applications using current agile practices (dev/ops)

  • 8+years engineering experience in a complex mainframe environment in the Financial Services industry
  • Experience with design and implementation of mainframe and distributed applications
  • Experience with mainframe infrastructure, z-platform, Linux on Z and z/OS technologies hardware and operating systems, application development and control of mainframe architecture, middleware and tooling
  • Advance knowledge and experience with modern mainframe technologies such as Java, Encryption, Sysplex, zOSMF, ZOWE, Hybrid Cloud, High Availability, Active/Active and Mainframe Networking
  • Advance knowledge and experience with Db2 and MQ IMS (Information Management System), specially in the capacity of a systems programmer Linux on Z.
  • Experience with in depth problem solving, analytical analysis, reporting and presentation to senior leaders and key partners
  • Strong industry knowledge of latest technologies and its relevance to the American Express environment
  • Deep subject matter domain expertise and knowledge of application processes and business flows
  • Ability to manage, influence and drive vendor direction to deliver innovated solutions that are beneficial to American Express
  • Demonstrated exemplary personal integrity and ability to build trust and collaborate across an organization
  • A superior ability to motivate and inspire team members to deliver on commitments
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adapt a message to the appropriate audience
  • Strong strategic thinking and decision making skills
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Science Engineering, or related field
