This is for a Senior Engineer II role in the Risk Decision Technology Platform supporting Worldwide Credit Authorizations System (WWCAS), specifically on the Network & Risk Capabilities Team which supports MVS and Midrange Platforms on Card and Non-card Authorization, Tokenization, ATM, Network Partner(s) certifications and communications via ISO 8583 specifications. This position will require high technical knowledge teamed with leadership qualities and working very closely with Business Partners in a highly agile and collaborative environment.

Organizational Context:

American Express Technology is looking for a Software Senior Engineer II to join a dynamic and innovative development team. Our team builds multi-functional, rich global credit authorizations solutions, critical to the core of American Express' business. The team uses the Agile methodology for project delivery and operates in a fast-paced business environment. From integrating with American Express Network partners, such as international banks, to developing highly available solutions and serving internal and external customers there will always be new and unpredictable challenges in this environment.

A successful candidate will be part of a multi-disciplined, entrepreneurial team responsible for leading and delivering world class Authorization's capabilities. Excellent problem-solving skills are a must as well as an expert knowledge of z/OS, Java, Dell Clerity, Big Data Components/Frameworks and other Java tools/frameworks. The candidate will support a global business where he/she will be required to understand and deliver against a diverse set of business needs as well as providing your own feedback and inputs.

This position is a Senior Engineer II and member of a product engineering or delivery and integration team reporting to an Engineering Director.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes requirements/ user stories to appropriately support design activities
  • Performs technical aspects of software development for assigned applications
  • Performs hands-on architecture, design, and development of systems
  • Functions as a contributing member of an agile team and helps deliver consistent development practices
  • Typically spends 60% of time writing code and testing, and remainder of time collaborating with stakeholders through ongoing product/platform releases
  • Designs and builds integration components and interfaces in collaboration with Architects and Infrastructure Engineers as necessary
  • Contributes to decisions about tools, methods, and approaches
  • Performs unit and assembly testing of software components including the design, implementation, evaluation, and execution of unit and assembly tests
  • Conducts code reviews and builds test automation
  • Debug software components, identifies, fixes, and verifies remediation of code defects
  • Performs ongoing refactoring of code and continuously improves product
  • Identifies opportunities to adopt innovative technologies
  • Provides continuous support for ongoing application availability
  • Understands impact on disparate systems, business units and long-term impact of technical design decisions.
  • Generates ideas to improve overall system design
  • Focuses on delivering high quality code on time and to specifications
  • Focused on cost savings, high performance, high reliability, quality of user experience and architectural alignment of solutions
  • Provides leadership, mentorship, and coach junior team members

Required Skills/Qualifications:

  • Must have 12+ years of z/OS experience, with strong COBOL, CICS, JCL, and SQL background, and 5+ years of Object-Oriented Programming experience and 4+ years of Java experience.
  • Hands on experience in designing & developing applications using Java 8 or higher with Spring framework, Spring Boot, REST APIs, Spring Security, or similar security frameworks.
  • Hands on experience in Big Data Components/Frameworks (Hadoop, HBase, HDFS, Hive, Scala etc.)
  • Hands on experience in RDBMS (Postgres/Oracle or similar), NoSQL (Cassandra) etc.
  • Demonstrated and proven hands-on experience on z/OS platform using COBOL, JCL, and DB2. Experience in CICS and IMS DB/DC is an advantage.
  • Deep understanding of CI/CD process and tools like - Git, Jenkins, XL Release on both distributed and z/OS platform etc.
  • Experience with messaging systems like Solace, Kafka, JMS, etc.
  • Experience with z/OS platform using COBOL, JCL, SQL, CICS etc.
  • Experience with databases such as Oracle, DB2, VSAM etc.
  • Requires hands-on knowledge and understanding of architecture, requirements analysis, applications systems design and integration, with a detailed understanding of applicable programming methodologies.
  • Has the ability to work with business partners and articulate technical concepts and design / implementation considerations.
  • Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence cross functional teams, business partners and/or vendor partners, and technology leaders
  • Must be able to thrive in an environment of heavy team interaction and collaboration.


Educational Requirement:

  • Preferably a Bachelor or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or other Technical discipline.



Preferred:

  • Experience with Network and Risk functions including Fraud capabilities, ATM, and other CAS Applications
  • Experience with Card and Non-Card Authorization, Network routing and Communications
  • Experience in multiple IT disciplines
  • Experience in multiple platforms - TPF, Midrange & z/OS
  • Experience with ISO 8583 specifications
  • Experience with tools such as Selenium, Control M, Topaz, Dollar Universe, XLR, Jenkins etc. a major plus
  • Knowledge and exposure with technologies such as: C, Python, JavaScript
  • Agile development experience
