Nikola is on the hunt for a talented and motivated Senior EE Hardware Systems Engineer to join the Electrical and Electronic Systems team.

You will:

  • Lead the Junior Engineers and new grads in the team's daily activities and tasks.
  • Determine how to integrate components into the vehicle's electrical architecture and set the example relying on experience and expertise
  • Initiate process and product improvement exercises
  • Assist the functional manager guiding the team in areas of expertise
  • Serve as logical owner for vehicle functions that impact the electrical system
  • Strive to become an engineering leader to help realize the company's objectives into engineering tasks, showing initiative to entry level and junior team members by setting the example.
  • Deliver logical schematics showing point to point wiring between components as it pertains to a vehicle function
  • Develop and implement scripts in Python to analyze vehicle logs against electrical system requirements
  • Track system level electrical characteristics such as total quiescent current, total continuous current, minimum voltage level and maximum voltage level for each electrical power circuit
  • Create electrical device connectivity specifications which are imported into Nikola design libraries
  • Create topology diagrams representing the placement of electrical components throughout the vehicle
  • Strive to become a systems specialist for electrical component design release engineers (DRE)
  • Become a subject matter expert in electrical architecture on Nikola platforms and train others.
  • Collaborate with ECU hardware, controls, firmware, and harness groups in Nikola and serve as the interface for the electrical and controls department to the rest of the company
  • Work on R&D special projects as directed to meet management objectives on current and future projects.
  • Be a role model and mentor to junior engineers while striving towards an engineering Lead role.
  • Take initiative to resolve technical issues as they arise and own them until completion.

You will become familiar with:

  • Electronic systems and architecture of battery and or fuel cell electric vehicles or comparable transferable experience
  • High level scripting languages such as Python and CAPL
  • EE Architecture and design layout tools such as Capital Logic, SysML, Lucidchart, Visio, UML diagram tools
  • Requirement, task, and project management tools such as JAMA and JIRA
  • Design for safety and homologation requirements derived from ISO 26262, FMVSS, UL, CMVSS, QS process documentation and processes required to bring products from concept to production.
  • Digital communication protocols and analysis tools - CAN, SPI, Ethernet, CANalyzer, CANape
  • Design process documentation such as DVP, FMEA, TSC, HARA, Capability studies, RASIC.
  • Presenting data to varied audiences for the purposes of conveying engineering information

You have:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Computer, or a similar engineering field with 4 to 7 years of experience.
  • A Willingness to join a diverse and dynamic team that works on the entire vehicle architecture on a fast paced group with responsibility across multiple programs (Fuel cell and electric drivetrains)
  • Ability to effectively communicate with different levels of the organization across multiple departments clearly and by relying on data
  • Demonstrated intermediate understanding of mechanical and electrical systems interactions in an automotive environment.
  • Understanding of any or some of the following: DC to DC converters, power systems switches (solid state and mechanical devices), High voltage DC systems, switching circuits, wiring loading, EMC compatibility, High voltage and or low voltage battery systems.
  • Understanding of design for manufacturability, manufacturing processes and controls (design, quality).
  • Understanding and knowledge of processes involving DFMEA, PFMEA, Control plans, FuSa, HARA, FEA, Root cause analysis, Impact analysis, Change Requests and reports
  • Proven ability in report creation and data analysis with a focus on real world problem solving.


Candidates must have current U.S. work authorization or be TN eligible from Mexico or Canada. This position is not eligible for CPT or OPT.
