We are looking for a Senior Director of Engineering to manage our Experience Group to build our Experience Engineering team and culture. We are planning to scale the Experience Engineering team by an additional 10-20 individuals at different levels of experience and we are seeking a director with experience building a team, guiding them, leading them in developing enhancements and innovations as well as guiding them through career development.

About this role

As a Director of Engineering (Experience), you’ll be responsible for evaluation of current platform development and investing in new cross functional capabilities. Work closely with Product and Design divisions on scoping potential projects, proactively identifying architectural  limits and determining what parts of projects are risky or unproven. Handle evaluation current technical offerings and advocates for beneficial, forwarding moving technological upgrades to enhance our current platform as a long-term strategy.

What you'll do

  • Manage aggressive hiring strategy without sacrificing quality.
  • Develop and manage a plan for continuous deployment and quality assurance.
  • Manage the team’s execution, delivery and performance by implementing high value processes and procedures.
  • Implement process to ensure reliable project estimates that generate frequent deployment. 
  • Raise the bar for the practice of software engineering as a craft in the following areas:
    • Carrier integrations
    • New connectivity capabilities
    • SIM logistics
    • NOC/SOC
  • Drives adoption of new processes for faster onboarding, fewer errors, and higher output.
  • Train and mentor engineering managers with personal growth and career development in mind.
  • Set high expectations for managers and for the team, able to conduct hard conversations that drive learning and growth.
  • Contribute to Hologram’s public reputation for engineering excellence.

Helpful skills and experience:

  • 10+ years Technical Engineering Management experience
  • Experience leading multiple high-performing teams with engineering managers as direct reports.
  • Experience managing an aggressive hiring process and training of new managers.
  • Has the ability to work closely with Design and Product to set strategy as well as interfaced with other departments for building internal products.
  • Experience as a full-time software engineer in career history with ability to handle code review, make decisions on architecture decisions (with relevant teams input) across multiple disciplines (e.g. Front-End, Back-End, DevOps, Data Engineering, etc).
  • Experience (leading teams that were) integrating against diverse gross third-party systems and APIs. Has a deep toolbox of strategies to mitigate grossness on the part of those partners. Knows how to wrangle updates and clarifications out of recalcitrant  partners.
  • Experience integrating against telco specifically, especially RADIUS and AT commands.
  • Experience with networking and signaling, monitoring, or logistics
  • Experience developing software for embedded devices
  • Has worked with or run an apprenticeship program.
  • Experience teaching or mentoring junior engineers, especially entry-level.
