About the job
The Red Hat Open Innovation Labs team. is looking for a Senior Consulting Site Reliability Engineer to join us.In this role, you will work with some of the industry's newest technologies around containers and industry leading enterprise open source solutions, including Ansible, Containers or Docker, Kubernetes (k8s), Red HatOpenShift Container Platform; Software Defined Networking (SDN) and traditional networking equipment; core servers or virtualization, operating systems, and OpenStack; applied to all major public cloud providers (AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure), as well as our own internal private cloud. You will be responsible for developing, maintaining and operating our Labs' infrastructure through automation, IaC and GitOps. You will code and automate the traditional roles of a system administrator at scale. Using your expertise in site reliability engineering (SRE) principles of automation and continuous improvement, you'll help create an environment where availability, reliability, and security are threaded through the entire application life cycle, not treated as an afterthought. You will consult with customers, to teach them the art and science of SRE, to help them build great new teams, and new software. You will enable a wider open source community to contribute to the further development of Red Hat's SRE practices and tooling. This is a United States remote-based role. Successful applicants must reside in a state where Red Hat is registered to do business.
What you will do

  • Work alongside customers, consulting with them on how to manage, deploy, and operate cloud solutions at scale using the principles of SRE, especially as it applies to successful adoption of kubernetes and Red Hat OpenShift
  • Enable Red Hat customers on how to establish, manage, and operate a SRE team within their organization
  • Work with a team of architects, consultants, and partners to design, deploy, and utilize business solutions built on Red Hat's enterprise open source technical stack
  • Contribute to, develop, and expand Red Hat's SRE practices and tooling
  • Be a lead contributor to automation of infrastructure and application management, and help showcase best in class Infrastructure-As-Code and GitOps implementations, using Ansible and other modern technologies like k8s operators
  • Evaluate solutions and technologies; make recommendations and present reports
  • Maintain technical competency in all aspects of our technology and market
  • Mentor junior engineers at Red Hat, and within our customers, partners and communities
  • Travel up to 70% of the year within North America, in line with Red Hat COVID travel guidelines, for various customer-facing and internal work efforts


What you will bring

  • Great written and verbal communications and mentoring skills
  • Ability to apply software development principles to solve operational challenges in distributed computing systems
  • Understanding of distributed systems and common distributed system failure domains
  • Experience in engineering reliable systems or engineering reliable software
  • Experience as a systems engineer or software development engineer
  • Background in computer networking, computer security, Linux and UNIX operating systems, public cloud solutions, system administration, continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD) pipelines, and Git or GitOps
  • Experience with container technologies, like Linux containers and kubernetes
  • Solid analytical and problem solving skills


The following will be considered a plus:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science or related technical discipline
  • Experience managing a production service with Red Hat OpenShift or Kubernetes
  • Datacenter architecture and design knowledge and experience
  • Experience designing and carrying out security incident response procedures
  • Experience developing a Kubernetes controller, operator, or platform component
  • Experience contributing to the design or codebase for a cloud-native service mesh solution
  • Operations experience with a production user-facing application
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies and follow industry trends
  • Ability to work on your own, and as part of a globally distributed team
  • Passion for open source software - as a user or developer
  • Active online presence with an interest in open source community development
