Boeing Research and Technology (BR&T) is seeking a Senior Configuration Design Engineer (Level 4) to join our team in Huntington Beach, California.
As a Configuration Design Engineer, you will use CAD tools to perform initial configuration layouts and continued updates to air vehicle designs. Knowledge of a broad range of air vehicle design disciplines is required so that proper allowances are made for aerodynamics, key structural elements, subsystems placement and routings, landing gear, and propulsion integration, including inlets and nozzles. You will be a key contributor to improving existing and developing new technologies, tools, and processes to enhance technology readiness, improve vehicle performance, and reduce cycle time and cost. You may assist in coaching and training others in all of the above areas.
Position Responsibilities:

  • Synthesizes conceptual/preliminary aerospace/aeronautical vehicles
  • Creates vehicle configuration designs from customer requirements
  • Leads multi-discipline design cycle and performs trade studies to assess design space, structural adequacy, cost effectiveness and regulatory requirements
  • Supports development of aerospace/aeronautical vehicle requirements (e.g., range, payload, operating and lifecycle cost)
  • Trains and mentors others
  • Develop 3D CAD models of new air vehicle concepts
  • Apply understanding of flight physics and subsystems integration to advise in making air vehicle design decisions
  • Allocate space for payload and all vehicle subsystems, including engines, inlets, exhausts, fuel, landing gear, actuators, avionics, etc
  • Work with Aerodynamics Designers to produce external loft surface shapes that are water tight for use in preliminary CFD analysis
  • Develop and verify airplane-level requirements
  • Key contributor to developing new and improving existing technologies, tools and processes to enhance technology readiness, improve vehicle performance and reduce cycle time and cost
  • Coordinate with a variety of internal and external customers
  • Good writing skills to respond to customer Requests for Information and Requests for Proposal
  • Ability to prepare and present charts to internal and external customers
  • Develop documentation to capture design decisions, analysis results, and process improvements
  • Develop new tools and techniques for improving analytical efficiency
  • Respond to a variety of technical challenges
  • Assist in coaching and training others in all of the above areas
  • Works under minimal direction


This position allows for some telecommuting. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at the listed location.
This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. An interim and/or final U.S. Secret clearance Post-Start is required.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
  • 4+ years of experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD) Tools


Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Master's degree
  • Experience with CATIA and/or NX CAD software


Typical Education/Experience:
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation
