NOTE: This is a Hybrid position within our IT Organization. The role will allow employees to work remotely, but will also require onsite work based on business needs. The selected candidate will be expected to live a commutable distance to the innovation center they are selected for. Relocation will be provided as needed.
We are targeting a start date on or after January 10th, 2022 for this position.
About the Role:
The senior AI/ML Solution Architect is a technical leader who will contribute to the overall technical design of a variety of data driven systems across the vehicle AI/ML product suite that provide key capabilities in enabling future Automated Driving and Electrification programs within General Motors. Additionally, as we embark on the Software-enabled Services journey, the senior solution architect will be involved in providing architectural guidance across the SeS landscape, including the emerging software-defined vehicle space.
The role can be broadly described in three parts: leading in the overall AIML product architecture approach; acting as the solution architect on specific vehicle oriented AIML products; engaging with stakeholders and relevant 3rd parties to coordination technical integration and ensure the integrity of product architectures across the vehicle AIML landscape, the software-define vehicle landscape and the software-enabled services landscape.
Overall Product Architecture: You will provide overall technical leadership and mentoring to solution architects within the AI/ML organization, ensuring the overall integration of systems supports program goals in a coherent manner. This will include designing clean integration points across systems along with maximizing reusability of capabilities. Of particular interest is:

  • Ensuring inter-operability (data, infrastructure and software) of AIML products across the ecosystem
  • Enabling foundational technical underpinnings with common components and reusability
  • Acting as the facilitating point for any potential technical conflicts


Product-Based Solution Architecture : On specific products, you will provide technical leadership to a diverse team of data scientists and developers during the development of the products, including developing solution architectures, component architectures and technical roadmaps. You will establish the technical vision and technical roadmap, and will determine the technical solution required to deliver on a long-term roadmap.
3rd Party Technical Coordination: You will engage external stakeholders, including organizations responsible for providing input datasets or data stream, software platforms, and hard infrastructure to ensure required external technical dependencies are understood and conduct necessary influencing to ensure gaps are road-mapped.
This role requires a deep experience in software development practices as well as mastery in data collection, system architecture, design and integration. The role is highly technical and requires a solid background in designing and architecting scalable and resilient data driven systems.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
The ideal candidate will have a highly technical background with the ability to manage a team as well as engage senior GM business executives and engineering leadership on IT solutions and technology capabilities. Key responsibilities include:

  • Actively engaging customer with product owner to understand needs and provide guidance on technical possibilities
  • Creating and maintaining solution architecture, strategic technical vision and technical roadmaps for variety of products
  • Drive the technical roadmaps through the agile process within AI/ML IT, including integrating with development team, accepting and proposing design changes during sprints to ensure solution architectures are being followed by development team
  • Lead fellow solution architects to ensure coherent technical designs across portfolio ecosystem that promotes reuse and integration
  • Collaborate within the broader GM IT organizations on both a technology and business level, driving requirement and needs as required for successful technical delivery
  • Lead POC/Technical discovery activities to prove out new concepts and architectures
  • Support keeping the team up to date with technological developments within GM IT and in the industry
  • Effective interpersonal relations skills, ability to effectively collaborate with others and work as part of a team
  • Navigate the wider organization within GM in order to accomplish results required


Additional Description
Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in a technical discipline or related experience
  • 5+ years of industry software development experience
  • 4+ years' experience with Java, Python and databases (Oracle, MySQL, Elastic Stack)
  • 2+ years' experience in an Architect /Technical leadership position
  • Able to quickly assess new projects/products, propose solutions, understand complexity & risks and map required capabilities
  • Excellent oral, written, problem solving, and presentation skills
  • Experience of working with development teams operating in an Agile environment
  • Experience influencing external organisations
  • Experience in developing highly scalable, and high-performance distributed systems, with a strong understanding of data structures and algorithms
  • Must be an excellent debugger and problem solver driven to possess knowledge and understanding of how things work
  • Experience optimizing systems for latency, throughput, and scale
  • An understanding of technical security as it applies to application and system design


Preferred Qualifications:

  • A master's degree in a technical discipline, or the background and experience that demonstrates a similar level of strong programming skills and practices
  • 4+ years' experience in an Architect /Technical leadership position
  • Deep experience in at least one of the following areas, and familiarity with one other:
    • Design and development of stream/event-processing architectures using technologies such as Kafka, Spark, Akka, Flink or their equivalents
    • Design and development of cloud native applications using Pivotal Cloud Foundry or equivalent PaaS
    • Knowledge and experience with application containerisation and orchestration such as Docker and Kubernetes
    • Experience with large datastore technologies such as HDFS, Cassandra, Elastic, S3
    • Experience with Monitoring and Instrumentation technologies such as ELK, Prometheus, Grafana
    • Experience with AI/ML and HPC technologies such as CUDA, Tensorflow, Numpy, PyTorch
    • Experience with geospatial data processing, analytics, and visualization
