Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience in vulnerability management, risk assessment, and remediation.



Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with software development lifecycles and related tools (e.g., bug trackers, software repositories, and code testing frameworks, etc.).
  • Experience building tools to support data management and automation including dashboards and SQL-based data manipulation tools.
  • Understanding of software, protocol and hardware vulnerabilities.
  • Ability to explain and reason about common programming errors and exploitation techniques (i.e., buffer overflows and OWASP web application vulnerabilities) and how they relate to threats and attacks.
  • Outstanding communication skills with the ability to represent and explain complex technical concepts to a variety of audiences (e.g., technical teams, customers, executives, etc.).



About the job

Our Security team works to create and maintain the safest operating environment for Google's users and developers. Security Engineers work with network equipment and actively monitor our systems for attacks and intrusions. In this role, you will also work with software engineers to proactively identify and fix security flaws and vulnerabilities.

As a Security Engineer in the Vulnerability Coordination Center you will be responsible for ensuring threats posed by software and infrastructure vulnerabilities are resolved. You will establish and mature cross-company processes around vulnerability management including operating models, maturity models, SLAs/SLOs, discovery, handling and reporting processes, roles/responsibilities, etc.

As part of a team, you will maintain Google's "Situational Awareness" around industry news on software vulnerabilities, including 0-day vulnerabilities and emergency patching. Additionally, you will coordinate resolution of issues cross-company that arise from vulnerabilities, including working with engineers who are addressing product defects, PR, and Support teams to provide information to customers or regulators, leadership prioritizing resources, and Incident Response teams that are coordinating incidents.

Additionally, you will work with industry partners in the vulnerability coordination space, including working groups, standards bodies, CVE issuance, etc. Lastly you will perform data analysis to find trends and classes of problems in vulnerability data so that engineering teams can take proactive measures to reduce risk.

Responsibilities

  • Manage vulnerabilities at scale, automate the detection and reporting of security flaws.
  • Support Google partner teams towards remediation of vulnerabilities.
  • Advocate security and secure practices throughout Google.
  • Coordinate resolution of issues cross-company that arise from vulnerabilities, including working with engineers who are addressing product defects, PR, and Support to provide information to customers or regulators, leadership prioritizing resources, and Incident Response teams that are coordinating incidents.
