As a Thin Film Process Development Engineer in Micron's Technology Development team, you will work on industry-leading semiconductor processes pushing the edge of memory device technology. We design, optimize, and qualify manufacturing processes for metal and metal oxide thin film deposition, an integral part of building memory devices. We take ideas from conception through development and implementation into manufacturing for commercial success. We work alongside Process Development Engineers, Process Integration Engineers, Equipment Development Engineers, and Characterization Lab Scientists, to focus on and accelerate the development of next-generation technology. We evaluate new deposition hardware platforms and process chemistries and carry out fundamental characterization, process development, and generation of intellectual property relevant to the company. We drive technology roadmaps, partner with vendors to develop processes that meet device requirements for future technology nodes, and transfer processes to pilot production and manufacturing facilities.
The successful candidate for this position will have strong abilities in the following areas:

  • Understanding solid-state physics including transition metal oxides, metals, surfaces, and interfaces, understanding fundamental challenges in materials exploration for device scaling.
  • Understanding chemical kinetics and their direct application to CVD, ALD, and PVD deposition processes in various deposition reactors.
  • Hands-on experience on thin film deposition equipment in a lab or clean-room environment.
  • An understanding of different types of thin-film analysis techniques such as SIMS, XPS, EDS, AFM, SEM, TEM, and XRR.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and statistical techniques. Evaluating and making insightful inferences from large amounts of various types of data, such as electrical and physical analysis.
  • Planning and carrying out effective, well-designed experiments and writing clear, concise reports detailing the results.
  • Being highly motivated and passionately focusing on solving problems both as part of a team and individually.
  • Leading projects effectively, making the best use of available resources.
  • Working independently and driving projects with limited supervisory input
  • Being detailed and willing to take ownership of the development of a process and tool.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Collaborating with a wide variety of people in different areas of process R&D, process integration, and pilot production to effectively accomplish tasks in a timely manner.
  • Giving and taking constructive feedback and using it to drive projects forward.
  • Passion for learning new skills as needed.


Requirements:
Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or similar field, or M.S. and 5 years of relevant thin film experience.
Additional Job Description:
Develops new or modified process formulations, defines processing or handling equipment requirements and specifications, and reviews processing techniques and methods applied in the manufacture, fabrication, and evaluation of products. Involvement may begin at any step from pilot plant to full-scale manufacturing. Coordinates design requirement review with appropriate engineering/scientific personnel to ensure compatibility of processing methods. Compiles and evaluates test data to determine appropriate limits and variables for process or material specifications. May conceive and plan projects involving definition and selection of new concepts, equipment automation technology, and approaches in the processing or development of new or improved processes.
