Battelle is currently seeking a Protein Engineer for the National Security Business Unit. This full-time position is located in Columbus, Ohio. Some domestic and international travel is anticipated.

JOB SUMMARY

Technical leadership and support to laboratory studies in the engineering of proteins and enzymes to produce industrially relevant molecules and improved tolerance to toxic compounds, engineering of enzymes involved in pathways for the buildup of high value compounds, and the identification and exploitation of opportunities to lead projects that enhance capability and/or support the development of new technical approaches.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support research projects focused on but not limited to engineering of enzymes to produce industrially relevant molecules at high titers and improve tolerance to toxic compounds.
  • Design protein engineering libraries via rational protein design, directed evolution, synthetic metagenomics, and other approaches.
  • Develop and implement high-throughput screening assays for various proteins and enzymes.
  • Engineer proteins and enzymes to improve catalytic activity, binding affinity, selectivity, solubility, expression, and stability in various host organisms.
  • Express, purify, and characterize protein and enzyme variants of interest.
  • Optimize and develop systems for improved breakdown of valuable feedstocks.
  • Actively engage in interdisciplinary research and collaboration between metabolic engineers, microbiologists, synthetic biologists, and bioinformaticians.
  • Prepare and present technical reports and presentations.
  • Conduct technical work and produce quality results within budget and schedule.
  • Assist in preparing scientific journal publications and presenting at professional meetings.
  • Assist in the development of proposals, marketing plans and identifying business opportunities.
  • Train, mentor, and lead junior technical staff.



Some domestic and potential international travel is anticipated.

THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED

  • A Ph.D. (or MS and 5 years' experience or BS and 10 years' experience) in biochemistry or related field with experience in molecular biology, protein engineering and synthetic biology.
  • Experience leading research projects.
  • Ability to travel.
  • U.S. citizenship, with the ability to obtain and maintain required government security clearances as a condition of employment.
  • Sufficiently medically fit to work in the laboratory and in the field to perform assigned duties.
  • The ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills



THE FOLLOWING IS DESIRED

  • Experience working within laboratory quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO17025, GLP).
  • Experience working with computational approaches to protein engineering.
  • Experience with microfluidics.
