Propulsion Manufacturing Engineer
Company Overview:
Relativity is the first and only company to automate aerospace manufacturing by integrating intelligent robotics, software, and proprietary metal 3D printing technology. Disrupting 60 years of aerospace, Relativity offers a radically simplified supply chain, building a rocket with 100x fewer parts in less than 60 days. Our long-term goal is to upgrade humanity’s industrial base on Earth and on Mars.
Team:
The Manufacturing team is building the factory of the future. Disrupting over 60 years of aerospace manufacturing, this team has a wide variety of responsibilities—from determining the most efficient factory floor layout, to building out cells for some of the largest 3D printers in the world. Unique to Relativity, you will get to work across many teams to iterate and support Relativity's first-of-its-kind 3D printing software and robotics technology. Overall, this team is critical to the launch success of Terran 1, among many other firsts!
What you’ll do:
The Propulsion Manufacturing team is responsible for manufacturing and testing engine subassemblies and integrating the Aeon-1 and Aeon-R engines. Relativity is seeking a talented Manufacturing Engineer who will contribute to the scaling and optimization of Aeon-1 assembly and factory testing, as well as the development of Aeon-R hardware and manufacturing processes for the Terran-R vehicle. A high degree of autonomy and initiative is required.
As a Propulsion Manufacturing Engineer, you will own and develop the processes for fabricating, testing and integrating Aeon engines and their subassemblies. You will serve as the main point-of-contact between the manufacturing and design teams as we optimize Aeon-1 production and pioneer development of the Aeon-R engine. This role will directly impact the evolution of human spaceflight.
- In order to be successful in this role, you should be someone who is organized, thrives in the presence of ambiguity and is able to drive their own projects to completion. You should be comfortable working in a startup environment.
- You must have the passion, tenacity and resolve to work through challenging issues unique to 3D printed and machined components.
- Ideally, you are familiar with a fast-paced, high-mix manufacturing environment, having worked hands-on with hardware while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary groups.
- Someone who can work with design engineers to ensure as-built hardware meet all aspects of the intended design, with a focus towards manufacturability and integration.
- Someone who can develop processes and procedures for post-processing of 3D printed parts and recommend design adaptations to improve reliability and throughput.
- Ideally, you have experience working with and managing relationships with external suppliers and ensuring on-time delivery of hardware.
- Someone with experience building strong teams and leading projects, directly and cross-functionally.
What you need to know:
- Degree in engineering or related technical field and 2+ years of relevant experience
- Strong communication skills, and ability to write detailed work instructions and process plans
- Strong hands-on acumen with hardware
- Ability to effectively investigate, resolve and screen hardware non-conformances
- Ability to drive failure investigation efforts, root cause analysis and implementation of corrective action(s)
- Ability to work with and train technicians
- Ability to work with vendors to get parts made quickly and reliably
- Familiarity with Additive Manufacturing, Subtractive Manufacturing and associated precision inspection techniques
- Knowledge of general assembly and test procedures, including tolerance stack-up analysis, structural proof testing and pressurized leak checks
- Familiarity with GD&T and industry specifications
Nice to haves but not required:
- Experience leading a small team
- Experience in a startup or agile development environment
- Experience working in a propulsion development program
