Carrier Fire & Security Products is seeking a Principal Verification Test Engineer for its Detector Electronics fire and gas detection business in Bloomington, MN! Det-Tronics has been supplying proven flame detection, gas detection, and hazard mitigation systems for high-risk processes and critical industrial operations worldwide since 1973. The company designs, manufactures, and commissions certified SIL (Safety Integrity Level) 2-capable flame and gas detection solutions. Det-Tronics products carry performance and safety certifications from globally recognized third-party testing agencies and approval bodies.
Position Summary:
The Principal Verification Test Engineer leads and manages the verification test aspects of New Product Development programs (NPD) and Sustaining products throughout their entire lifecycle, which includes the creation and execution of test plans and protocols. In addition, they lead the development of the capabilities and competencies for verification testing.
Major Job Functions:
- Provide technical leadership to test team members.
- Lead the design, writing, and execution of product verification test plans, procedures/protocols, and reports for electro-mechanical flame, gas, and systems products including their subsystems and components.
- Work with stakeholders to develop testing strategies for subsystems and overall product performance
- Participate in the development of the requirements with an eye on testability and take the necessary actions to develop any new test methods that may be required.
- Create software programs and algorithms to support automated test procedures.
- Perform pre-verification testing to debug and troubleshoot test methods.
- Ensure accurate and complete requirements test coverage and lead the review including with technical and subject matter experts.
- Comply with development processes, lead technical reviews, and implement verification tests that meet product requirements with properly documented work deliverables.
- Preparation and release of technical documents in a controlled quality system.
- Support project managers by providing work breakdown plans and task estimates in support of project plans and schedules. Track and report progress as well.
- Build (as needed), maintain, and calibrate verification test tools, instruments, and fixtures. Ensure they are properly documented with drawings, instructions/workflows, and design specifications.
- Establish (as needed), implement, and maintain written verification and testing standards and policies.
- Support multiple product development programs at a given time.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical strongly preferred).
- 9+ years of experience with a minimum of 5 years of direct experience in verification testing.
- Must have led the verification testing of at least one product development effort from inception through market launch.
- Possess a thorough knowledge of Verification Test methodologies, tools, and instruments preferably for regulated products. High hazard applications (Industrial Life Safety, SIL2) knowledge is strongly preferred.
- Experience with functional safety standards (e.g., IEC 61508) and Functional Safety certification is desired.
- Must be able to understand requirements and apply that knowledge in the evaluation of a product via technical analysis and/or testing.
- Must be able to follow department operating procedures and have an open attitude for continuous improvement.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills to document and present data, and articulate test results to agencies and internal team members, and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated root cause analysis skills.
- Manual and Automated Testing experience with automated testing programming skills (Python, C/C++, Java, or other high-level language is acceptable).
- Demonstrated ability to work both collaboratively and independently on assignments.
- Self-motivated and demonstrated ability to lead process improvement activities.
- Must be able to perform essential job functions safely, which includes hazardous materials and equipment, and work within established company guidelines.
