Microsoft Quantum has assembled a talented and diverse international team to create the world's first scalable quantum computing system. Our full-stack approach involves exciting innovation from the physics of quantum devices through scalable readout and control systems based on cryo-electronics. The Microsoft Quantum program strives to fundamentally change the world of computing to help solve some of humankind's currently unsolvable problems. We are on the cusp of an accelerated effort in quantum computing.

The Quantum Hardware Systems Engineering group is seeking a Principal System Engineer to join our growing team and apply a systems approach in our efforts to develop and integrate a full scale Quantum system. The ideal candidate is an effective collaborator with demonstrated leadership skills and who has a breadth of design experience ranging from high bandwidth communication theory and systems, low noise RF amplifiers, superconductors, embedded systems, digital signal processing, measurement and instrumentation, and cryogenic environments.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and specify key quantum computer sub-system paradigms
  • Lead and participate in all aspects of the design, analysis, fabrication, bring-up and characterization of key sub-systems for scalable system and qubit control, qubit readout, and system interconnect for a quantum computer.
  • Prepare and present technical reviews to the quantum team leadership and members
  • Lead and assist with third party technology and process development as they relate to the needs of the Quantum System Engineering team.
  • Develop and deliver projects on budget, working closely with the Quantum Program Management team.
  • Contribute to the growth of the Quantum Hardware System Engineering group through on-going assessment of capabilities, technology and equipment needs with active leadership in efforts to address gaps



Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in electrical engineering
  • Specific design and system integration experience involving one or more of the following areas: cryogenic amplifiers, cryogenic electronics, low noise / high speed analog and digital circuits/instrumentation, RF and high-speed digital interfaces, digital signal processing, spectroscopy and/or RF-reflectometry, signal integrity and RF/EMI mitigation techniques
  • 10+ years' industry or related experience
  • 0-25% domestic and international travel will be required



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Detail oriented with good organizational skills
  • Desire to work in a collaborative international team
  • Experienced at working with architecture teams and applying a systems approach to model and analyze the trade space and adequately specify sub-systems
  • Excellent problem solving and debug skills with a solid understanding of core engineering principles, fundamental circuit design, and analytical techniques
  • Track record of successful design, delivery, and manufacture of systems or subsystems of high complexity
