Job summary
The Red Hat Engineering team is looking for a Principal Software Engineer to join us. In this role, you will focus on developing and integrating cloud-native applications on the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform. You'll help us improve, adapt, and enhance Red Hat Cloud and Red Hat Application Services for use in various industries and emerging technologies. As a Principal Software Engineer, you'll also help us combine Red Hat's long experience and success in providing stable and reliable software with the demands of a fast-changing technology landscape, so that strategic customers and partners can migrate their critical workloads to cloud-native platforms. You will be an active contributor to the mission of the group. Successful applicants must reside in a state where Red Hat is registered to do business.
Primary job responsibilities

  • Design, configure, and implement Kubernetes system architecture based on requirements
  • Review, validate, and document each proposed Kubernetes system architecture
  • Focus on online-first and cloud-native software development and containerization of existing software
  • Identify high-value solution stacks and associated customer-oriented, end-to-end use cases in cloud configurations
  • Evaluate solutions stacks by integrating Red Hat's products including virtualization, cloud, storage, middleware, and management products and partner offerings as necessary


Required skills

  • B.S. or M.S. in computer science, computer engineering, or equivalent
  • 10+ years of software industry experience
  • Solid analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Expertise in scripting in and configuring a Linux environment
  • Experience deploying, tuning, and debugging applications running on Kubernetes
  • Experience configuring and deploying monitoring and alerting for applications running on Kubernetes and Kubernetes itself
  • Ability to adapt to changing strategies and priorities
  • Understanding of multi-tier architectures and environments
  • A wide degree of creativity and latitude
  • Excellent people and leadership skills
  • Excellent written communication and presentation skills
  • Motivated and willingness to take charge of assigned projects while managing all aspects with minimal supervision


The following will be considered a plus:

  • Understanding of cloud-native architecture and design principles
  • Experience operating applications running on Kubernetes at scale in a production environment
  • Experience with some of the following services: Ingress, Ingress Controller Network Policies
  • Specific technology keywords: Kubernetes, Ansible, Terraform, Istio, Envoy, Nginx, HAProxy, MetalLB, Helm, Rancher, Elastic, Prometheus, Grafana
  • Kubernetes Operator development experience and expertise
  • Ability and experience in software development using Go
