Principal Satellite Systems Engineer
Your role in helping us shape the future:
As a Principal Satellite Systems Engineer within the Space Systems department, you will create requirements and design concepts for Intelsat's Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellite constellations and lead the procurement of these satellites. You will perform communications analysis of Intelsat's existing and new service types and use the results to optimize the MEO constellation and design of the satellites and create requirements for the constellation and satellites. You will also lead the satellite manufacturers through our procurement process for these new systems, including RFP generation, proposal evaluation and contract negotiation. The position requires a thorough understanding of MEO system technical design attributes and the ability to perform design trades that will have a significant effect on the overall benefit to Intelsat. In addition, you must be able to deliver a high degree of technical innovation to constantly push Intelsat toward new capabilities, higher efficiency, and better cost-effectiveness. The decisions and recommendations that you make will directly drive the technical excellence of Intelsat's space systems and therefore our competitiveness in the marketplace.
Are you up to the challenge?
- Lead an inter-departmental team in optimizing the constellation configuration (e.g., altitude, inclination, number of planes, number of satellites).
- Develop payload requirements for the MEO satellites.
- Independently develop conceptual designs of Intelsat's new satellites and new satellite systems and perform technical analyses to support these new designs, optimizing the communications payload on each satellite and the overall constellation
- Participate in the Intelsat Space Technology and Services roadmap by evaluating and recommending new technologies for possible use on future spacecraft.
- Generate Requests for Information (RFI), Requests for Proposal (RFP) and technical contract documents for new satellites. Take part in evaluation and commenting on satellite proposals submitted in response to the RFI or RFP, providing inputs to management during contractor selection process.
- Lead the technical negotiation process with selected contractor for the new satellites under procurement.
- Participate in satellite system Preliminary and Critical Design Reviews for satellites under construction, providing critical review and commenting on information packages prior to the meeting.
- Collaborate with the Strategy, Asset Management and New Product Development groups to help develop satellite fleet planning and deployment strategies.
You should definitely have:
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a relevant field of study
- At least ten years of experience in Non-Geostationary Orbit satellite communications
- Strong ability to perform independent analyses of satellite communications parameters and links
- Strong analytic skills to translate requirements into a successful design
- Knowledge of satellite system design including ground stations and user terminals
- Experience with spacecraft hardware and manufacturing programs
- Proven experience in spacecraft payload design and evaluation and/or spacecraft antenna design and evaluation
- Ability to build positive working relationships and to serve as an interface with customers, contractors, and subcontractors
- Demonstrated conflict resolution skills combined with strong negotiation ability, delivered with a high level of influence and professionalism
- Ability to independently generate detailed communications link budgets
