JOB DESCRIPTION:

Abbott Rapid Diagnostics is part of Abbott's Diagnostics family of businesses, bringing together exceptional teams of experts and industry leading technologies to support diagnostic testing which provides important information for treatment and management of diseases and other conditions.

Our location in San Diego, CA currently has an opportunity for a Principal User Experience Design Engineer within our Abbott Rapid Diagnostics business. The Principal User Experience Design Engineer will provide technical expertise to the design and development of point-of-care, rapid in vitro diagnostics (IVDs) for Infectious Disease.

Principal User Experience Design Engineer will focus on the user interaction with the test, in particular the collection and loading of a diverse set of samples. They will develop product concepts of user facing consumables and hardware, through the design, prototyping and testing process. The ideal candidate is a subject matter expert in design and user experience that can provide technical consultation to the broader team. As development continues, they will responsible for human factors and usability testing of the complete test system.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Works with an in-house team and external partners to develop product designs for point-of-care IVD systems.
  • Leads team to conduct formative and summative studies of designs with customers to understand the user experience and ability to perform the test as intended. Defines experimental strategy, drafts protocols, collects and evaluates data, writes reports, and determines design direction based on data.
  • Interfaces with a cross-functional project team to ensure design requirements are met and product meets quality standards.
  • Maintains detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and development and assist in transfer to manufacturing.
  • Coordinates activities with outside suppliers and consultants to ensure the delivery of supplies or services needed to meet scheduled timelines.
  • Identifies and communicates with key contacts outside own area of expertise.
  • Perform other duties & projects as assigned.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU'LL BRING

Required

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design or similar field
  • >8 years of experience in product design


Preferred

  • Knowledge of the clinical IVD testing work environment
  • Experience in medical device development and design controls
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Organized and detail oriented
  • Ability to work in a team environment
