Job summary
The Red Hat IT Network team is looking for a Principal Network Engineer to join our global organization in Raleigh, NC. In this role, you will provide essential support for Red Hat's critical IT hybrid cloud infrastructure, applications, and core services utilizing modern DevOps and network reliability engineering (NRE) tools and methodologies. Our mission is to provide highly available, performant, and extensible global network connectivity, supporting Red Hat associates and critical business processes. You will ensure continuous and optimized operation and provisioning of IT network infrastructure that supports our public and private cloud infrastructure, offices, and datacenters. You will respond to and resolve incidents and alerts, fulfill service and change request tickets, and assist in process improvement, documentation, and automation.
Primary job responsibilities

  • Plan and lead major cross functional initiatives, engaging with global Infrastructure team members and internal partner teams
  • Collaboratively develop the global architecture and design for critical enterprise services and platforms, including VPN, enterprise wireless, load balancing, WAN connectivity, office, and DC infrastructure
  • Follow company policies and processes while completing technical tasks and implementing technical solutions
  • Provide on-call coverage during working hours as part of a rotation, as well as periodic rostered and planned on-call support on weekends; on-call coverage acts as an escalation point of contact as L1/L2 issues are covered by our network operations center (NOC) vendor
  • Identify, document, and assist in the automation of operational support procedures and processes
  • Participate in a 24/7 follow-the-sun global support model around deployment, maintenance, monitoring, response, and capacity planning for business-critical systems and infrastructure
  • Travel when necessary to another Red Hat office for assigned work, meetings, or training
  • Provide technical leadership support for high severity and critical platform-impacting events
  • Identify and raise significant environmental or project risks to management
  • Mentor team members and recommend training opportunities; identify key skill-sets, current and future-looking, working with management to build team capabilities


Required skills

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
  • 10+ years experience in network administration, supporting production systems in an enterprise environment
  • Expertise across key network administration areas like solid ability to build, maintain, and troubleshoot IP networks across different vendors and, topologies
  • Understanding of the different network architectures like core, distribution, and access vs spine and leaf, as well as across the OSI stack
  • Demonstrable understanding of how diverse systems and technologies interact in a complex network environment
  • Experience with switching protocols, spanning-tree, 802.1ad, VLANs, 802.1q, VXLAN, etc.
  • Experience with routing protocols e.g., EVPN, MPLS, BGP, OSPF, static routing, etc.
  • Direct experience with the IOS and Juniper CLI
  • Firewall appliance experience
  • Understanding of VPN or transport encryption technologies
  • Ability to create and read network trace packet captures
  • Ability to create standardized network infrastructure documentation
  • Wireless infrastructure support and implementation experience
  • Direct experience with AAA protocols
  • High level of ethics and computer security practices knowledge
  • Ability to work own your own and balance competing priorities
  • Positive approach toward customers; ability to cooperate and communicate well within the global team
  • Significant experience developing scripts and automating tasks with Python or Ansible
  • Experience with network monitoring systems, time series databases and collecting metrics using SNMP and gNMI
  • Familiarity with ITSM and ITIL methodology


The following are considered a plus:

  • CCIE or JNCIE -level skills
  • Experience in a NRE role
  • Demonstrated experience participating in projects or coordinating the efforts of those in a globally distributed team
  • Experience with agile development methodologies
  • Software development skills including methodologies, processes, and best practices
  • Experience working with the business and customers on identifying requirements and translating business goals to technical solutions
  • Experience using Ansible to automate workloads
  • Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) or Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) certification
  • Experience with OpenStack, OpenShift, Ansible, Virtualization
  • Experience with continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD) processes and tools
