Principal Enterprise Architect, Mainframe
At Northwestern Mutual, we are strong, innovative and growing. We invest in our people. We care and make a positive difference.
This is an outstanding opportunity for a mainframe application architect with a keen interest for modernization to join a company of choice and enjoy the best of both worlds: the strong foundation and resources of a thriving organization built over more than 160 years, alongside a progressive, fast-paced IT team working with the latest and greatest technology.
What's the role?
As many financial institutions, a mainframe is at the heart of Northwestern Mutual's technology ecosystem. Unsurprisingly, Northwestern Mutual's technology approach has evolved along the years, now leveraging a cloud-based containerized microservice approach with modern CI/CD practices, and some intermediate states in-between. There is a stark contrast between the mainframe ecosystem and our modern development approaches.
This role is for a Principal Enterprise Architect to work with teams doing mainframe-based development to establish a modernization strategy and execute on it.
This is a high-impact role across NM's Technology organization, working with engineering leaders to implement our technology modernization strategy on a platform core to our business.
What you'll do:
• Work with the different organizations doing development on the mainframe to understand their current state and challenges
• Define the application architecture target state with the rest of the enterprise architecture team to ensure that it covers those mainframe team's needs
• Work with the engineering community to define a target state for logic and data living on the mainframe, along with a transition path
• Lead those teams to realize Northwestern Mutual's enterprise technology application strategy
• Provide thought leadership on application architecture & technology across Vice President and Engineering Lead levels and ensure that engineering and IT work is aligned with Northwestern Mutual's business and technology strategies
• Guide teams via the definition and recommendation of application architectural patterns, engineering practices and standards and partner with engineering leaders to promote their adoption across the organization
• Provide day-to-day mentoring and coaching to junior architects and technical professionals
• Ensure Technology Architecture meets financial, compliance, security and risk goals
What we're looking for:
• Bachelors in Computer Science / Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience
• 9-14 years of professional experience required
• 8-10+ years of experience leading teams as an architect or engineer lead
• Hand-one experience with mainframe development, mainframe applications architecture
• Experience modernizing mainframe applications
• Experience with design and implementation of large, complex enterprise systems over an extended period of time
• Preferred: Experience building modern Web applications and APIs
• Preferred: Experience with both on-premise and cloud-based application architecture
• Preferred: Experience with event-driven patterns, domain-driven design
• Knowledge of technologies such as PL/I, DB2 for z/OS, MQ
• Previous participation in large-scale enterprise technology planning and implementation
• Ability to collaborate and provide leadership in a large group of engineering leads and be accountable for driving efforts towards defined outcomes that align to business strategic goals
• Experience leading orchestrated enterprise planning methodologies (e.g., SAFe).
