Within our Energy and Industrial Automation team, our vision is to enable safe and high performing products to enter the global markets by providing industry leading safety, performance and expert services to our clients. The goal of E&IA is to add value to our clients with expert knowledge of global markets and risk mitigation through scientific leadership. We are focused on delivering a total solution package to cover full product life cycle services- from product concept design to recycling - and a customizable, comprehensive portfolio of services to our customers.
What you'll learn & achieve:

  • Based on input from Regional Lead Reviewers (RLR) and other subject matter sources, drafts, develops to implementation and maintains consistent and technically appropriate certification requirements in NFPA Installation Codes and Standards, ISO Standards, UL and ULC Standards and Outlines of Investigations, as well as Certification Requirement Decisions (CRDs), Practical Application Guidelines (PAGs), Laboratory Procedural Guides, Standardized Appendix Pages (SAPs), Follow-up Inspection Instructions (FUIIs) and other standard specific ancillary documents to provide for consistent interpretation and application of requirements for UL's product certification services.
  • Lead UL's participation in applicable outside Standards development and maintenance (IEC, NFPA, IEEE, and ISO) to foster consistent and technically appropriate certification requirements.
  • Develops and / or reviews the development of technical content that serves as the basis of training programs for RLRs, Field Services and other UL staff to ensure appropriate and consistent application of requirements. Schedules staff meetings and/or teleconferences with RLRs for discussions of technical requirements, procedures, form usage, etc.
  • Serves as the technical project handler of qualified New or Innovative products. In this role, develops or identifies requirements to address new technical developments or product features. Works in conjunction with and utilizes the resources of the Principal Engineering Managers/Directors, Chief Technical Officer, Research, Legal, Engineering Operations to completely review the New or Innovative product and develop the appropriate requirements for certification. Utilizes external resources such as UL's Electrical Council in determining impact on Codes and Standards. Prepares a letter report of findings for review by the Principal Engineering Manager/Director and distribution to the customer through Commercial Operations.
  • Works with the responsible Commercial Operations staff to determine the need for and scope of an Industry File Review (IFR) as the results of pending standards. Works with the responsible engineering staff to determine any necessary equipment and skills needed resulting from the changes to the standard. Also works with engineering to determine the effective date of any needed IFR. In conjunction with Operations, initiates IFRs for UL certified products, ensuring all affected clients are advised of the new requirements. Drafts Important Letter and other file review form correspondence.
  • Represents UL and participates in UL/Industry Technical Meetings and UL Council Meetings in the area of expertise as agreed to by Commercial Operations.
  • Provides technical support and makes technical presentations.
  • Assists Commercial Operations in the determination of new business opportunities. Advises Commercial Operations of the technical resources needed to actively participate in new businesses and identifies new service offerings.
  • Operates UL's certification schemes for Functional Safety certification and ensures proper application of requirements globally.
  • Performs other duties as directed.


What makes you a great fit:

  • University degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or Physics from an accredited program or related field plus directly related experience in Functional Safety evaluations.
  • Detailed knowledge of UL operations and technical vocabulary common to involved categories.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop safety requirements for complex, new and innovative products.
  • Working knowledge of relevant industry issues, needs and problems.
  • Working knowledge of UL's Engineering Operations, Follow-up Services and Standards development process.
  • Ability to collaborate and perform as a respected technical resource for peers, management, and constituency.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.

  • Total Rewards: In the United States, t he salary range for this position is $122,700-162,900 and is based upon years of experience that is commensurate with the level of the position. All employees at UL Solutions are eligible for annual bonus compensation. The target for this position is 20% of the base salary offered. Employees are eligible for health benefits such as medical, dental and vision; wellness benefits such as mental & financial health; and retirement savings (401K) commensurate with the standard rewards offered in each individual location or country, for the relevant position level. We also provide employees with paid time off including vacation (15 days), holiday including floating holidays (12 days) and sick time off (72 hours).
