Overview

Are you seeking a leadership opportunity that involves providing equipment and system engineering solutions in a fast-paced manufacturing environment? Imagine your next position as a Principal Engineer I with U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company (USSTC) in Richmond, VA.

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting and leading our new product design transfer from concepts to commercialization. The location will start within the Richmond area supporting Product Development, ALCS Engineering, USSTC Engineering to execute the life cycle of the new product(s) to transfer into a future manufacturing location. This includes leading a vertical startup manufacturing system for a diverse portfolio of products.

Specific accountabilities include:
• Deep understanding of the PMTA process, and help define requirements that will transfer to manufacturing. • Technical lead providing engineering solutions to scale up manufacturing equipment supporting future products. This includes receiving product and process requirements to transfer in scalable equipment to commercialize.• Independently conceive, lead and complete projects requiring the application of engineering best practices, procedures, GMP, and FDA guidelines. • Analyze and apply problem solving techniques to develop and implement improvements for methods, processes, products, systems, documentation and equipment.• Participate in and/or conduct FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing), IQ/OQ/PQ (Installation Qualification/Operational Qualification/Process Qualification), audits and training programs.• Work collaboratively within a cross functional team environment.• Actively troubleshoot and problem-solve new process and packing equipment which is non-traditional to Altria's fleet of assets. This may include working on customized equipment or small food making machinery and adapt to new OEMs.
• Provide presentations and recommendations to senior management. • Provide technical recommendations and make occasional presentations to senior management.• Lead the activities of vendors, OEMs, and contractors.• Contribute to major programs/projects which require coordination by technical personnel.• Ability to learn and execute a vertical startup operation regardless of the location.

Qualifications include:
• Undergraduate degree in an engineering discipline is preferred. • 6-8 years of hands-on manufacturing or new product development, preferably in packaging and processing.• Demonstrated ability to apply equipment or process knowledge and technology to analyze and troubleshoot machinery problems in support of factory maintenance personnel.• Working knowledge of processing, high-speed packaging machinery and engineering systems.• Experience in a rapid, agile, consumer-driven product development environment.• Strong communication and leadership skills with the experience leading technical projects and presenting scope, timelines, and budgets to senior leadership.• Project engineering experience with knowledge of fiduciary and budgeting policies/practices.
