Primary Purpose of Position:

The Principal Engineer, Global Engineering Product Design is responsible for creating product designs and associated high speed metal forming tooling for aluminum beverage packages. The Principal Engineer will develop, create, test and support tooling designs that generate aluminum containers that meet customer specifications and achieve Ball’s Sustainability goals. The Principal Engineer will be located within and drive global tooling and product standardization efforts within one of three operating regions (Europe, North America or South America). The Principal Engineer, Global Engineering Product Design will collaborate with the Global Engineering Designers, regional engineering teams, manufacturing plants, and tooling suppliers to develop best in class products and high performing tool designs.

Essential Functions:

• Responsible for product design and performance of aluminium beverage containers.
  
  • Determine product design and test product designs against regional and global customer specifications
  • Validates product performance by performing feasibility trials and works to hand regional engineering teams a production worthy tooling package.
  • Facilitates and maintains dialogue on global product and tooling changes with regional engineering teams.
• Responsible for high speed tooling design
  
  • Designs, procures and tests high speed metal forming tooling design changes.
  • Generates summary technical reports and recommendations for tooling changes with supporting data
  • Works within pilot line and/or high speed manufacturing plants to test tooling performance over time.
• Responsible for generating global strategy on tooling design
  
  • Drives regional engineering teams and manufacturing plants to migrate to global standard tooling.
  • Supports regional engineering teams through Teamcenter ECN/ECR process and reports out global best practices.
  • Supports global tooling supplier quality management program(s)
  • Supports Global Procurement in developing new suppliers, evaluating existing suppliers and working to facilitate global pricing when possible.
  • Works directly with Tooling Suppliers to facilitate cost reductions and standardization plans
• Assists Lead Engineer in mentoring other engineers in product, equipment and tooling best practices.

Region Specific Responsible Areas:

• Regional Engineering and Manufacturing Plant Support
  
  • Generates and/or supports regional AFE development on tooling costs.
  • Intakes Engineering Change Requests (ECR) and works towards global solutions.
  • Provides remote or in person tooling and product support after escalation path has been followed

Position Requirements:

• BS in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field, such as mathematics, metallurgy or physics required.
• MS in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field, such as mathematics, metallurgy or physics desired.
• 5 or more years’ experience in aluminum beverage can manufacturing.
• Experience working with geographically dispersed engineering and manufacturing teams
• Demonstrates excellent verbal written communication skills. Listens well to stakeholders and ensures an open line of communication to ensure internal and external customer needs are met.
• Demonstrates excellent technical writing skills
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office products, specifically Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
• Demonstrates excellent Design of Experiments knowledge and uses statistics to generate conclusive reasons for change
• Demonstrates excellent skills in Lean Manufacturing and Statistical analysis. Green Belt and/or Black Belt preferred.
• Illustrates composure and patience and is comfortable with change/unknown.
• Ability to work across multiple projects
• Excellent ability to overcome roadblocks by enabling others with clear communication, troubleshooting and data
• High level of project management skills and good with project/program management tools such as MS project
• Excellent technical and problem solving skills. Ability to trouble shoot and develop corrective actions for tooling/product problems and develop methods for improving product performance.
• Demonstrates leadership ability and a strong self-motivation with a desire to make an impact

Compensation & Benefits

• Hiring Salary Range: $86,500 - $132,00 (Salary to be determined by the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.)
• Other Compensation: This role will be eligible to participate in the annual incentive compensation plan.
