The Principal Reliability Engineer will protect, provide for, and progress the software and systems behind all OptumRX's digital services with an ever-watchful eye on their availability, latency, performance, and capacity across 40 plus digital assets. Their team is responsible for evaluating critical alerts utilizing engineering experience and training to develop solutions that eliminate failures and proactively find automated self-healing solutions in the future. The Principal Reliability Engineer will track the production losses and abnormally high maintenance cost assets, then find ways to reduce those losses or high costs. They will foster collaboration between the SREs, SLOs, DevOps, and all teams that support our services in order to provide a full "ecosystem view" and strive for greater stability and discover cost savings with automation.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Critical incident management engagement (war rooms)
  • Identifies and communicates enterprise-wide impact of internal and external issues and trends related to stability
  • Monitoring and analyzing multiple systems and researching and proposing solutions to issues
  • Anticipates and pro-actively improves systems and future designs for increased performance and availability
  • Evaluates existing engineering processes and recommend improvements and recommend new technologies to improve system performance and reliability.
  • Prepares various reports for executive and senior management review such as resource allocation, budget, engineering department activities, status reports, etc.
  • Mentor Engineers growing into an SRE role, focusing on methods to drive reliability and influence design & direction
  • Utilize log forwarding technology to troubleshoot problems and identify trends. Ability to coach others in learning this technology
  • Encourage collaboration and cohesiveness within their team
  • Lead teams outside their immediate organization in implementing SRE principles
  • Ensure solutions are of high quality, are high performance and are scalable
  • Work with Support and Operations leaders to ensure that Engineering SLAs are met and escalations are managed effectively

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience
  • 8+ years of professional IT experience
  • 8+ years of experience as a Site Reliability Engineer
  • 5+ years of experience in people management
  • ITIL Incident, Problem, and Change Management experience
  • Windows Server, Active Directory, Citrix, Openshift Enterprise, VMWare experience
  • Microsoft Azure experience
  • Observability - Experience with tracing and monitoring platforms such as Opentracing, Splunk, New Relic, Datadog, Prometheus


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to manage and Ensure Compliance with IT Structures/Processes/Technologies
  • Experience in service management practices and processes within a continuous delivery environment
  • Exceptional leadership skills and be a people person with an ability to develop strong, meaningful, and lasting relationships with others
  • Demonstrated experience in enterprise network technologies
  • Experience driving delivery in a high-profile corporate environment
  • Proven communication skills including explaining complex concepts effectively to technical and nontechnical audience, negotiation and persuasion, conflict resolution, and presenting to executive levels

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only : The salary range for Colorado, Connecticut and/or Nevada residents is $110,200 to $211,700.
