The Principal Composite Research and Technology Engineer will be proficient in the field of composites processes and materials with a focus on thermoplastic processing. It is preferred that this individual have experience with Automated Fiber placement, stamp forming, and joining process of continuous fiber thermoplastic composite to aid in developing next generation materials, process, and applications that provide a significant impact to company performance targets. Although this role has a focus on thermoplastics, a candidate with a depth of knowledge on thermoset materials and process is considered qualified as well.

Please note that this position could be onsite in Windsor Locks, other Collins Aerospace locations, hybrid, or fully remote .

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage and execute composite's initiatives to proposed milestone schedule and budget that focus on expanding our current knowledge as well as the future of composites in support of Collins performance and cost initiatives
  • Interacts with engineering groups across Collins Aerospace (US & EU teams, Collins strategic business units), universities, research institutions, and composites supply chain to mature knowledge of composite materials & manufacturing to Collins' applications. This includes new material qualification, manufacturing readiness level progression, and specification generation/support.
  • Develops technical relationships with strategic material & manufacturing suppliers and attends technical conferences to understand capabilities and limitations in the composites industry. Reports to team on differentiating technology ideas and how they can apply to needed solutions.
  • Support business unit specific composites initiatives by providing material and process expertise, technical solutions to challenging projects, and project management support when required
  • Contribute to strategic planning activities by providing technology recommendations and needs for future research & development.



Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and 8 years of prior relevant experience OR
  • Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years' experience OR
  • In absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience is required
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Strong Project Management or technical team lead experience



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Industry experience in the field of composites, ideally with a strong focus on composite materials and manufacturing
  • Composite design, analysis, or modeling
  • Composite manufacturing knowledge & skills including hand layups, resin transfer molding, filament winding, in-situ automated fiber placement, compression molding, thermoforming, thermoplastic welding, injection molding, and/or additive manufacturing.
  • Composite part testing on coupons, components, and assemblies
  • Knowledge of six sigma and or lean manufacturing in a development environment
