Responsibilities:

The Principal Automation Engineer - Next Gen MES will support innovation evaluation and implementation for Manufacturing Process Automation and IT Systems with a focus on Lilly's implementation of a next gen MES (Manufacturing Execution System), representing OT (Process Automation) as a business SME.

Lilly is at a critical juncture as we tool up to realize the potential of our product pipeline. We are building new processing capabilities around the world, and emphasizing emerging, cutting edge processing technologies, such as continuous processing and advanced biotech platforms. Additionally, we are recapitalizing older assets, and bringing the operational philosophies in line with current technologies. Lilly places a high value on fully automated manufacturing processes, as the quality and operational benefits are baseline expectations of new process design. As part of this journey, Lilly is at an exciting stage of designing and deploying a new MES platform across our Parenteral Manufacturing Network.

This role is a senior-level engineering role which requires a 4-year engineering degree, preferably in Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related science field. The position requires high learning agility and an interest and/or background in control programming, data historians (and databases), data integration, and MES platforms. There is an expectation of travel to other Lilly international locations generally not exceeding 10%.

The primary focus of the role will be to work with the next generation MES team to evaluate, design, and deploy the new MES across Lilly's parenteral manufacturing network. The Process Automation Engineer - Next Gen MES will represent the Automation/OT function on this project as a core team member of the MES Center of Excellence, ensuring integration with our existing Process Automation Systems. A high level of experience in automation architecture and technology trends is desired, with additional expertise needed in the primary areas of process automation and control: safety systems, process control, motion control, and batch control. The Center of Excellence will be responsible for delivering a global validated IT platform that can be deployed to our manufacturing sites globally while driving standardization and process optimization.

Global Process Automation & Control Engineering is part of the Lilly Corporate Engineering Tech Center (ETC). The ETC is a technical resource for training, standards, project implementation, and the center of engineering excellence for the corporation, providing deeply technical resources to solve the most intractable technical problems in manufacturing.

Key Objectives/Deliverables:

Work safely and continually look for improvements to both people and equipment safety.

Core Member of the Next Gen MES Center of Excellence
  • Serve as the lead for day to day decision making for their for the function
  • Needs to have influence and understanding across all sites
  • Escalation point for Process Automation (OT) function
  • Identify areas of standardization
  • Develop harmonized processes where appropriate
  • Provide business requirements
  • Act as an ambassador for the program
  • SME for Process Automation (OT) function on the system capabilities
  • Serve as functional representation for design governance
  • Act as consultants to the deployment teams


Expertise with Automation Technologies - Lead the corporation's efforts to better engineer automation projects on all platforms.

Data Integration -Develop robust and innovative solutions enabling our manufacturing engineers to utilize data to drive improvement decisions, identify issues, and utilize advanced analytics.

Corporate Initiatives - support key corporate initiatives with robust data integration strategies enabling connectivity of Lilly platforms. This includes major Capital Delivery and partnerships between Lilly Engineering and IT.

Drive implementation and use of technology governance processes.

Bring external and innovation focus, combined with a strong understanding of business objectives, manufacturing and quality processes and technologies, IT/Automation applications and Infrastructure, to define the future state vision for manufacturing.

Serve as a key thought leader across Corporate Process Automation and MQ IT to maximize value through the best leveraging of information technology. Partner with IT Solution Architects, Business Process Architects, Global Infrastructure Team and external resources and key customers to identify business problems, opportunities and processes to set the strategic Process Automation Integration direction to meet business needs

Basic Qualifications/Requirement:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in engineering or a related science field.
  • Minimum 4 years' experience in process automation (OT) engineering and data integration (e.g. data historians, data analytics, visualization, MES integration, enterprise level applications, and data integrity)


Additional Preferences:

  • Knowledge of Data Integration, Databases, Enterprise Systems, Process Automation Systems (PLC and DCS), Data Historians, and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES).
  • Core knowledge related to ISE S95 and S88 principles and IT/Automation integration
  • Ability to work well with different cultures
  • Experience in pharma or GMP industry Experience working with validated systems
  • Expertise in Lilly's preferred platforms, including Rockwell Automation, Emerson DeltaV, PMX, and Syncade
  • Experience in OSI PI Data Historians
  • Experience with MES integration with process automation systems


Other Information:

  • Monday through Friday Day Shift of 7:30am-4:30pm with some allowance for flex time.
  • Location: Indianapolis, IN or site hosted role
  • Travel: Domestic and International travel required (15%)
