Patreon strives to provide creators with insight, education, and tools that make it possible to retain creative control while running their creative business, so creators can focus on creating and energizing their fanbases.

Our user base has doubled in the last year alone, and we have paid over $2 billion directly to creators on our platform. In order to support this level of growth, Patreon is looking for a Principal Architect.

What you will do:

  • Define and implement the end-to-end technical architecture (with collaboration with all Senior Engineering leadership) in order to scale our business. This includes:
    • Defining and implementing the common product services, required by both Membership Product and Payments
    • Defining the longer-term Patreon API strategy and implementing the architecture to support that strategy.
  • Partner with all Product Engineering teams to ensure that the Patreon product is highly performant as it scales to the needs of our growing user base.
  • Mentor engineers  to advance their technical skills and careers.
  • Constantly improve our team culture, practices, and effectiveness.

Skills and experience you possess:

  • In depth knowledge of of Typescript/Javascript
  • Experience with React and React Native
  • Experience with node.js and related web frameworks
  • Experience with GraphQL and keeping GraphQL performant
  • Experience with build tools like Webpack, Babel, CircleCI
  • Experience designing clean and useable APIs
  • You prefer practicality over dogmatism
  • Penchant for elegant and simple solutions for complex requirements
  • You are a strong collaborator and can influence technical teams, and you take them along with you.
  • You operate effectively across teams and disciplines even in highly ambiguous situations.
  • You have experience building inclusive team cultures.
  • You care about building great products.

  • You will own and drive the evolution of the technical architecture required to fulfill our mission of funding the creative class.
  • You will partner with engineering leaders to build a world-class team of engineers that cares about the craft of building excellent products.
  • You will help us build a great culture and a great company.
  • You will help us participate in technical communities and build a strong engineering brand.
