An individual in the Architecture job family is a strategic role for UHC Government Programs. This individual will be involved across many aspects of architecture, design, build, engineering and implementation of technical solutions and capabilities providing technical leadership. The focus of this role will focus on the member management domain with an emphasis on member enrollment and eligibility experience for government products.
Overall responsible for communicating overall architecture vision, technical strategies, and trade-offs across various levels in the organization to gain buy-in. Will provide recommendations and technical guidance to improve performance, reliability, and reusability within the constraints of budget, resource, and business dependencies. Engages across teams and vendors in a capacity that ranges from assisting with on going initiatives, technical briefings, and demonstrations of new technologies across the organization. This includes partnering directly with the business on solutions, capabilities, and is a strong influencer that engages with executives and stakeholders.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate definition of Business - Product - Technical Strategy in collaboration with product managers and other leaders
  • Research, identify, and define current state, gaps, and Solution for highly complex opportunities and problems through discovery and analysis
  • Develop conceptual models of Solution Candidates; document using a combination of text and diagrams
  • Drive architecture decisions that consider security, performance, scalability, reliability, and usability in solution design
  • Create and present decision matrix with recommendations on how to proceed to stakeholders and senior leadership, as appropriate
  • Architect and work with Product Engineering Teams to design and deliver solutions that align with enterprise architecture standards and advance the architecture toward Technical Strategy via interim states
  • Identify and leverage reusable patterns
  • Collaborate with the business and engineering stakeholders by clearly identifying scope, application impacts & sizing
  • Work with the delivery teams to identify and minimize technical debt - in the immediate term and as part of the Technical Strategy
  • Collaborate across other architects and team members across UHG, Optum, and UnitedHealthcare as appropriate

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in technology
  • 6+ years of implementing and integrating technology solutions. Arc of experience should cross disciplines of data engineering, cloud solutions, system integration, solution design, development/configuration, and deployment
  • 4+ years of experience in technical roles at an architect or senior engineer level
  • 4+ years of supporting enterprise services that support best-in-class experiences for consumers and other constituents - with a particular focus on non-functional requirements
  • Professional experience facilitating and leading solution design, architecture & delivery planning activities across multi-disciplinary teams
  • Experience with business problems and solution options with high degree of complexity that connects multiple domains and technologies
  • Experience successfully communicating solutions and patterns to geographically diverse teams including senior leaders, employees, offshore, internal-partner, and contractor resources
  • Working knowledge of industry standard patterns, practices and technologies including streaming and containerization


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional experience architecting/operating solutions built on cloud platforms (private and public both)
  • Experience successfully driving alignment across organizational lines in large/complex matrixed companies
  • Working knowledge of Security, Privacy, and PHI, PII, or comparable concerns

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $113,500 to $218,100. The salary range for Connecticut / Nevada residents is $113,500 to $218,100.
