The role of Principal Architect serves as an ambassador to business and technology stakeholders and will align and communicate solution strategies for one or more capability domains for the UnitedHealthcare Community & State (C&S) business segment.
The Principal Architect plays an important role by bringing together information in ways that provide new insights and perspectives on operational effectiveness as well as future business opportunities. These insights could come from partnering with senior business leaders to determine the feasibility of new ideas, assessing emerging trends in the industry, understanding market needs in RFPs (Request for Proposals), interactions with technology partners, opportunities for POCs (Proofs of Concepts) and many other avenues of exploration.
Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as an advisor to business stakeholders for strategic planning and prioritization; as needed, assist in decomposing complex strategies into smaller initiatives to achieve business results rapidly
  • Translate business goals for multiple lines of business, and identify common, shared business solutions
  • Provide impact analysis, high level size of effort, support cost-benefit analysis and financial planning for large program initiatives
  • Facilitate exploration of solution options and decide on optimal business systems solution that balances short term needs with long term architecture vision
  • Deliver and communicate target state architecture vision and blueprint with an implementation roadmap; ensure ongoing roadmap alignment as new initiatives are introduced
  • Analyze current business and platform capabilities to detect critical deficiencies and recommend steps to modernize and transform
  • Work across organizational silos to create guiding principles to resolve dependencies and accelerate solution decision making within C&S domains, across other UnitedHealthcare segments and with enterprise architecture
  • Partner with other architects and business stakeholders to identify new business opportunities, partnerships, and products to achieve broader enterprise goals
  • Analyze industry, technology, and market trends to determine their potential impact to UnitedHealthcare capabilities and recommend strategic considerations
  • Lead IT responses for RFPs, and translate customer commitments into actionable program statements of work and architectures
  • Oversee documentation, artifacts and designs created by junior-level architects to ensure a balance between our domain level objectives and enterprise architecture strategies
  • Ensure optimal process in the team's ability to prioritize demand, efficient assignment of work, and timeline commitments are met

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in computer science, information systems or STEM related field
  • 10+ years of combined experience in one or more of the following architecture disciplines: business architecture, solution architecture, enterprise architecture
  • 8+ years of experience in leading a team (coaching to elevate performance and drive results)
  • 5+ years of experience in creating capability vision and blueprints with implementation roadmaps (may be asked to provide examples / artifacts)
  • 5+ years of full lifecycle application and software development experience
  • 5+ years working on large programs using waterfall and agile frameworks
  • Experience managing relationships with senior and executive level business leaders
  • Highly skilled in: defining/clarifying problems, analyzing impact, exploring options with industry perspective
  • Solid interpersonal skills, including verbal, visual, and written communication
  • Highly proficient with MS Office tools including Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Visio, and Access
  • Working knowledge of the following business and technology concepts: data management, data fabric, APIs, microservices, SOA, cloud, container, software/platform/infrastructure as a service, rules engines/BPMs, big data, predictive modeling, machine learning, artificial intelligence, mobile/digital applications, data architecture and governance
  • Full COVID-19 vaccination is an essential job function of this role. Candidates located in states that mandate COVID-19 booster doses must also comply with those state requirements. UnitedHealth Group will adhere to all federal, state and local regulations as well as all client requirements and will obtain necessary proof of vaccination, and boosters when applicable, prior to employment to ensure compliance. Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree
  • Health care industry experience
  • TOGAF certification or experience with PEAF, and/or other enterprise architecture frameworks
  • Experience in using architecture planning tool such as Alfabet, Troux, Casewise, Sparx or Mega
