Mission Summary

We are seeking a talented Principal Applications Engineer to join us in building the next generation of services, integration and automation.

We are building an autonomous driving system that is used by hundreds of users and operators, spread out across different cities in Asia and the United States of America. This individual supports research, development and operations by working as a thought leader and trusted advisor. With an ever expanding footprint, we enable teams of researchers, engineers, testers, and operators across the entire company to explore uncharted territory by enabling our self-driving cars to learn from new environments and go where no other self-driving car has gone before.

The Principal Applications Engineer works to ensure the suite of applications being used by Motional is scalable, reliable, available and manageable.

The Motional Pittsburgh office is located in the new Hazelwood Green development at 4734 Second Avenue, a culmination of the city’s goal of restoring an economic driver to the neighborhood in a thoughtful, inclusive, and sustainable way. With views along the Monongahela river, the Pittsburgh office is in the heart of this new state of the art development.

What you'll be doing:

Things you'll get to work on:

  • Strategy input ensuring that applications and integrations align with the growth strategy of the organization.
  • Improve the methods and practices that influence the architecture and design of an application.
  • Identify solutions and services for business needs through RFI/RFP process.
  • Design and implement integration flows and enhancements, including APIs and/or file-based integrations
  • Gather and analyze business and customer requirements to identify and prioritize opportunities for improvement in efficiencies and processes through integration.
  • Manage API connectivity, and service mesh technologies.
  • Develop master data management strategies for our critical application ecosystem and track sources of truth across systems
  • Prepare and manage technical documentation and self-service resources on integrations.
  • Simplify the configuration, discovery and routing of numerous independent services.

What we're looking for:

  • Demonstrated and advanced understanding of application security, APIs and data structures.
  • Desired understanding and experience with AWS, Azure or GCP.
  • Work with large-scale services and applications to deliver enhancements and integrations.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to team to build cloud competencies.
  • Write high quality, and maintainable code.
  • Use your deep software development expertise to guide others on better software practices and principles.
  • Experience with system integration technologies (e.g. RESTful APIs, OAUTH 2.0, event brokers,
  • data virtualization).
  • Experience with integration platforms (e.g. MuleSoft, Boomi, Workato, Zapier)
  • BS in Computer Science or related field.
  • Prior experience with global footprints.
  • Experience in architecting, designing, and implementing public or private cloud solutions.
  • Familiarity with Docker, containerization technology, and Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with Serverless Architectures.
  • Experience in CI/CD environments.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and tuning systems.
  • Ability to articulate ideas to non-technical audience.

Bonus points:

  • Technical certifications for AWS, Azure
  • Knowledge of scripting and automation tools including Chef, Ansible Tower, Python and PowerShell
  • Project management experience, certification
