Job Summary:

Operations Engineering (OE) is a multi-disciplined engineering organization within RMD Operations and Security. The Operations Engineering West leader is responsible for a 700 employee directorate with manufacturing domain expertise across the product life cycle that apply a variety of engineering and analytic problem solving skills in order to implement, maintain and improve manufacturing/test processes, utilize lean principles to develop and optimize the manufacturing/test systems, apply product and test equipment knowledge to ensure that the products are sufficiently tested and meet all requirements, provide materials analysis and selection criteria, provide equipment and processing support, and leverage knowledge and technical skills to influence business decisions and results across new designs to recurring production.

The Operations Engineering West Director position will report directly to the Operations Engineering Executive Director and work collaboratively with the West Operations Leadership Team to support the goals and objectives of Operations. In addition, the Operations Engineering West Director is expected to work with the leadership of Mission Areas, Supply Chain, Quality and Engineering to ensure collective cross functional strategies and resource staffing are optimized to achieve RMD objectives. The Operations Engineering West Director will be responsible for development and deployment of common tools/processes that ensure competitiveness and effectiveness of resources and solutions. The Operations Engineering West Director is responsible for the tactical Center leadership to ensure RMD success, as well as to provide the strategic direction for the organization.

The Operations Engineering West Director will also be expected to provide a broad range of technical engineering leadership and support, including oversight at Gate Reviews, Design Reviews, Non-Advocate Reviews, proposal and bid support, and identification of execution/cost improvement strategies. The Operations Engineering West Director will also work with Department Managers to set and achieve organizational goals/strategies. The Operations Engineering West Director will need to be an effective communicator, leader, task executer, and decision maker, as well as a strong advocate for process improvement, diversity in the work force, staff development and exemplary organizational integrity standards.

Responsibilities to Anticipate:
Lead a multi-discipline engineering organization comprising of departments supporting factories and programs in Tucson (AZ), Farmington (NM), Camden (AK), McAlester (OK), Louisville (KY), and Huntsville (AL).

  • Ensures organizational projects meet commitments for technical, cost, and schedule. Ensures consistent application of Operations Engineering processes and tools
  • Supports proposal efforts through guidance in the development and review of Gate 4 activities
  • Serves as the OE representative to both internal and external customers and Business/Corporate leadership as required
  • Leads employee development through effective employee performance management including goal setting, career development, compensation planning, employee training, developmental task assignments, and appropriate use of awards and recognition
  • Mentors and provides effective guidance, coaching and leadership to OE leaders and individual contributors
  • Ensures that Operations Engineering West performs in accordance with compliance and legal requirements associated with Safety, Security, Procurement, and the handling and transportation of dangerous goods
  • Leads by example by being a champion of respect, diversity/inclusion and ethical conduct within the organization


Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Typically requires a Bachelor's in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and 14 years prior relevant experience or an advanced degree in a related field and minimum 12 years prior relevant experience
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance prior to the start date. U.S. citizenship is required as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance

Qualifications We Value:

  • Experience in leading an organization of 300+ people
  • Advanced Degree (MS or PhD) in related technical discipline
  • Experience with cross functional acumen in Supply Chain, Quality, and Engineering
  • Previous demonstrated leadership experiences in both Engineering and Operations organizations
  • Demonstrated experience in effective talent development
  • Experience in financial planning, analysis, & cost account management (overhead, cost controls).
  • Knowledge of program management tools such as earned value, basis of estimate development, and project planning.
  • Knowledge in risk identification and assessment.
  • Understanding of broader policies and organizations that shape manufacturing policies within the aerospace industry and Department of Defense contractors.
  • Ability to effectively balance between technical design maturity and manufacturing capability
  • Experience with proposal preparation
  • Demonstrate executive presence, excellent written, verbal, and oral communication skills, solid judgment, reasoning, and decision making abilities
  • Expert knowledge of manufacturing engineering tools and processes across a product life cycle.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience which includes increased roles and responsibility, leadership experience: preferably in direct manufacturing experience
  • Keen manufacturing and test engineering knowledge in support of Operations including Lean principles
  • Proven technical acumen in the manufacture, test and integration of complex product technologies and systems
