Job Description
Engineering Manager - Inventory Event System Foundation
We are seeking an Engineering Manager to guide the growth and delivery of a service layer designed to route inventory movement in an easily traceable, self-healing, event-driven platform. In this role, you will lead a talented group of engineers within the Inventory Ingress organization. You will set engineering and operational excellence standard for your team. You will also work closely with product management, program management, and partnering teams to align technical roadmaps with business requirements. You will provide leadership to your team to manage inventory effectively and support Nordstrom's retail and e-commerce growth. You are a highly technical leader with a bias towards action and the ability to drive consensus. You are comfortable discussing software architecture and leveraging data to influence decisions. You have a proven understanding of the fundamentals of agile software engineering, deep knowledge of the software development life-cycle, and experience to draw from that helps you build towards a future state while making smart trade-offs to meet current objectives. You will raise the bar for your team, helping them to deliver their best work. You will also help each team member grow, identifying teachable moments, training and work that supports their career goals. You are a creative problem solver, and you know how to measure and improve your products and teams.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for architecture and solution level design at the team level
  • Influence quality standards and understand, identify, and measure across an entire solution
  • Assist in enhancing department vision and strategies to support company goals and receive guidance from more senior leaders
  • Create training opportunities for team to learn the latest technologies and methodologies
  • Ensure team has the tools, resources, and information they need to be successful
  • Hire capable and motivated talent/teams that can deliver swiftly and predictably, adjusting in an agile fashion to deliver solutions aligned with business needs
  • Contribute to architecture, coding, test plans, project plans, deployment planning and operations to drive excellence and lead team towards its goals
  • Employ continuous improvement methodologies across own team (e.g. quantify impacts to customer first, eliminate waste, increase productivity, iterate quickly, shorten feedback loop, create relevant KPIs)


QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in Computer Science or comparable experience
  • 5+ years of hands-on professional experience in owning and operating business critical systems
  • Experience (2+ years) managing/leading a team of junior and senior engineers to achieve impactful results
  • Deep experience in development, are comfortable working in code and skilled at explaining and advocating for new technologies and solutions
  • Profound care for your people and the desire to help those who want to help themselves
  • Demonstrable ability to establish a vision, define a roadmap, and to execute on it
  • Pragmatism. You can prioritize, simplify, and make a path toward results
  • Proactive mindset. You seek the best solution for the company and customer and take action without being directed
  • The capability to truly listen to our customers and partners, internalize their needs and develop simple and elegant solutions that they can't live without
  • A bias towards action guided by evidence-based decision-making mindset
  • Comprehensive knowledge of back-end technology - Java, Python, AWS, Kafka, Kubernetes, RESTful architecture, micro services, and Database RDBMS (preferably PostgreSQL, Oracle)
  • Experience with Oracle Retail Merchandising Applications (RMS, RIB, SIM) is a plus
