Wing is looking for a Mechanical Engineering Manager to lead our Mechanical Design team based in Palo Alto, CA. The ideal candidate can demonstrate hands-on experience in driving innovative products from concept, through prototyping and design, all the way to manufacturing. They will show an intrinsic drive towards simplicity and robustness in their design philosophy. They will be committed to fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment where every team member is empowered to leverage their strengths in order to deliver their best impact. 

What you’ll do: 

  • Manage, mentor, and guide a team of mechanical engineers with diverse backgrounds who drive the development of Wing’s growing portfolio of aircraft and ground support hardware
  • Encourage innovation and technical leadership across all areas of mechanical/mechatronic hardware development and related processes
  • Foster personal growth by assigning each team member to projects tailored to their skill levels, long-term goals, personalities, and work styles
  • Set clear expectations and create a positive, supportive, and inclusive work environment
  • Support the performance review process and provide effective feedback
  • Hire and develop new talent to improve our capabilities, enhance our capacity, and execute on product development opportunities
  • Implement both tactical and strategic team and org-based improvement initiatives
  • Drive cross-functional consensus building in a highly ambiguous environment and promote strong, “silo-free” communication and collaboration between teams
  • Support schedule/budget development and coordinate with program management
  • Help define streamlined hardware development and verification processes
  • Provide focus and technical leadership in design reviews
  • Identify and mitigate potential risks/issues throughout the project life cycle
  • Actively reduce complexity by fostering simple and elegant designs/solutions
  • Champion product safety and reliability for mechanical systems and components with the highest level of integrity

What you'll need: 

  • 10+ years of mechanical design development engineering experience; 5+ years of managerial experience
  • Proven track record of building, leading, and managing high-functioning design and/or technical teams
  • Ability to inspire and coach individuals and groups to achieve career development and performance goals
  • Proven track record of building relationships, fostering collaboration, driving conflict resolution, and working cross-functionally with multidisciplinary teams
  • Experience managing priorities in ambiguous situations; strives in a fast paced environment, adapts quickly to new requirements
  • Proven track record and expertise in mechanical design of relevant products (lightweight and robust structures/mechanisms, tightly integrated electronics enclosures and thermal solutions, DFM/DFA)
  • Practical knowledge of how to quickly prototype and test designs as well as experience with high-volume production manufacturing methods like injection molding or die casting
  • Proficient in CAD software and EPDM (SolidWorks preferred) 
  • Creative problem-solving experience

  • Experience with weight optimized UAS structure design, FEA, CFD, and thermal modeling
  • Passion for aviation
  • Can showcase a portfolio of unique design solutions (work or hobby)
