Manager, Turbomachinery Engineering

Team:
Relativity seeks a highly talented engineering manager to join a rapidly growing space startup. This role falls under the Turbomachinery & Components organization. We are responsible for designing, manufacturing, and testing turbopumps, valves, and dynamic components for the Aeon-1 and Aeon-R engines. This position will provide outstanding leadership to support the development of the Terran 1 and Terran R launch vehicles, as well as helping to build a world-class team.
What you’ll do:
Our mission is to change people’s conception of the way rockets are built and flown. As Manager of Turbomachinery Engineering, you will architect and own how we design, analyze, and qualify our turbopumps for flight. You will have the opportunity to shape Relativity’s strategy for turbomachinery by developing your core engineering team, establishing key relationships with external suppliers, and working across departments to stand up in-house manufacturing processes.
In order to be successful in this role, you should be someone who thrives in ambiguity and is familiar with a fast-paced aerospace work environment. You must have the passion, tenacity and resolve to relentlessly support your team as they work through challenging issues unique to their hardware. More specifically, we are looking for:
- Someone with demonstrated success building and leading high-performing teams.
- Someone with a successful track record developing clean-sheet turbopumps in-house.
- Someone with a deep understanding of turbomachinery design, manufacturing, and supply chain management.
- Someone highly organized, able to craft strategies, and provide direction in undefined/developing areas of the business.
What you need to know:
In order to be successful in this role, you should have the following:
- Degree in engineering or related technical field and 7+ years of relevant experience.
- 3+ years of engineering management experience.
- Demonstrated history of leading teams in developing rocket turbopumps with cradle-to-grave ownership.
- Demonstrated success working cross-functionally with multiple department leaders to drive organizational improvements.
- Strong communication skills and highly organized.
- Ability to think and operate both tactically and strategically.
Nice to haves but not required:
- Degree in engineering or related technical field and 10+ years of relevant experience.
- 5+ years of engineering management experience.
- Experience in a startup or agile development environment.
- Experience working in a flight development program.
