Manager, Software Engineering (Content)
Media Engineering builds the software and systems that prepare media content and metadata for the Disney Streaming platform - providing the best possible playback experience to our viewers. We handle audio, video, and metadata content from ingest through publish - for normalization, processing, and packaging - supporting operator tools and automation for a scalable workflow. We build logic across players and back-end services to measure, control, and optimize playback across our stack.
We're changing the world of streaming video and looking for a talented Engineering Manager who will be an exceptional addition to our team. As an Engineering Manager on the Extended Metadata team you will be driving the technical architecture, implementation and improvement of services that manage all extended metadata such as artwork, sports, people, tags across millions of titles delivered to hundreds of millions of viewers for Disney+, Hulu and Star+. You will be expected to work cross-functionally with product, operations, project management and upstream and downstream engineering teams to align on our designs for new and extensible models and features. You will also drive Dev Ops best practices for the team, so our software just runs itself.
As a leader on this team, you will need strong communication skills, both within engineering teams and with partners across the business. You will need to design software systems and a solid understanding of distributed systems design and architecture. You will be able to translate high-level business requirements into scalable software solutions and drive complex software projects from inception to delivery. Finally, you need to be passionate about career development and have a strong track record of attracting, hiring, and developing top-tier engineering talent. Open to remote candidates as well on the West Coast or East Coast or any of our Disney Hubs.
Responsibilities:
- Build a world-class software development team through a combination of training, career development, recruiting, and process improvement
- Influence and drive software engineering and architecture best practices and standards within the team and wider organization.
- Collaborate efficiently with Product Managers and other developers to create roadmaps, gather requirements and drive implementation.
- Drive and maintain a culture of quality, innovation and experimentation
- Enable data-driven prioritization and decision-making for your team through cross-organizational communication
- Foster an open environment of mutual support and engineering effectiveness
- Hire and nurture engineers through mentorship and career advocacy. Provide goals, career path, promotion guidance, motivation to your direct reports.
- Ultimately responsible for the project success, including the full lifecycle of software development (requirements gathering, designing, building, testing, maintenance, support, stakeholder management, innovation, team growth), product and architecture vision and execution against that vision and organization objectives
Basic Qualifications:
- 6+ years of relevant software engineering experience
- 2 years of management experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong proficiency in at least one widely used server-side programming language (Java, Python, etc.)
- Experience building large scale distributed systems, solving problems including scalability, reliability, observability, validation, cost efficiency, etc.
- Experience deploying and running AWS-based solutions and familiarity with tools such as DynamoDB, Elasticache, Lambda, IAM, Kinesis, S3, etc.
- Exposure to architectural patterns of a service-oriented web application
- Strong passion about automation, testing, and code quality.
- Great communication and collaboration skills and a team-focused approach towards software development
- Demonstrated ability to attract talent, build teams and have fun.
Required Education:
- BS or MS in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent practical experience
