We are seeking an energetic, innovative, and knowledgeable individual to add to our RESS Safety Validation team! On this team, we ensure the designs of our rechargeable energy storage systems (aka RESS or battery pack) meet all safety requirements, and performance exceed customers' expectations. The LSTE, or Lead System Test Engineer, provides indirect leadership to a team of Validation Engineers by engineering the team's workflow, supporting validation test execution, method development, and virtualization support, among other areas. This LSTE will be primarily focused on the validation of the system-level RESS Safety activities, meaning the entire RESS (battery system) and module (collection of battery cells).
The LSTE role provides opportunities to apply and hone a wide range of engineering and leadership skills as you organize a team, gain deep electrified propulsion system knowledge, and implement robust, optimized validation plans (hardware & virtual based). This position provides extensive opportunities to improve your personal network as it requires collaborating with product teams, development, lab operations, and VDDV teams.

  • Leading through influence / indirect leadership
  • Project planning, coordination, execution and tracking at a system-level scale
  • Technical understanding at system, subsystem, and component levels
  • Validation processes and methodologies (physical and virtual)
  • Analytical methods to support hardware test elimination
  • Understanding of both the Global Vehicle Development Process (GVDP) and Global Propulsion Development Process (GPDP)
  • Significant expansion of personal network
  • Understanding of propulsion laboratory operations

Specific Job Responsibilities:
  • As the testing lead, cultivate a supportive, inclusive team environment with a focus on advancing the team's safety-centered culture
  • Facilitate team planning & innovation efforts using an Agile Team workflow
  • Develop & coordinate creation of new validation tests from concept to inclusion in ADV plans
  • Shape the team's performance metrics to identify potential improvement ideas
  • Perform and support root cause analysis and correction of system level problems locally and globally
  • Mentor and advance training opportunities for new and/or less-experienced colleagues
  • Plan first-of-build-phase critical hardware testing
  • Coordinate across the lab operations, development, and validation teams
  • As required coordinate with external labs to adequately scope test plans. The ability to travel to support external lab qualification and test reviews is a plus.
  • Stays abreast of new technology and competitive products in the electrification space

Additional Description
Basic Required Skills:
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience
  • Experience in development, validation, calibration, and/or design release in conventional or electrified propulsion systems or components
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Computer Science, and/or Information Technology
  • Knowledge of system/component content, technical requirements (SSTS, CTS, VTS, etc.), development needs, program timing, and standard validation tests

Preferred Skills:
  • MS Engineering
  • Experience with electrical, thermal, or chemical virtual modeling and simulation
  • Ability to learn complex system functions (i.e. thermal propagation and electric propulsion) quickly
  • Experience with battery laboratory technology (battery cyclers, test automation systems)
  • Experience in one or several areas: Battery Electric Vehicle Systems (Electric Motors, Drive Units, Power Electronics, HV Batteries), Vehicle or System-Level Calibration, ICE or Conventional Transmission Development or Validation, Instrumentation & Test Automation, CAE/Analysis Background
  • DFSS and Root Cause / Red-X experience
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex data and to make sound recommendations
  • Demonstrated ability to influence without authority and present complex technical topics
  • Exhibits appropriate interpersonal styles and communication methods to work effectively with diverse teams
