JOB DESCRIPTION:

Join the Platform Adoption Engineering Team on a journey to build innovative new services and solutions on top of the Platform in collaboration with Caterpillar Customer organizations.

JOB DUTIES: As a Lead Software Engineer you will lead the design, development, testing and deployment of software systems and/or applications.  Be responsible for overseeing and mentoring junior developers in state-of-the-art software engineering and delivery best practices.

  • Competent to perform all programming, project management, and development assignments without close supervision; normally assigned the more complex aspects of systems work.
  • Acts as team leader for development and support groups; provides programming and application/technical leadership, guidance, and assistance to other team members.
  • Works directly on complex application/technical problem identification and resolution, including responding to off-shift and weekend support calls.
  • Works independently on complex systems or infrastructure components that may be used by one or more applications or systems.
  • Drives application development focused around delivering business valuable features working with Product Owners using Scrum and/or Kanban best practices. Actively supports the Product Owner and Team in requirements grooming, and execution of Sprint commitments.
  • Mentor and assist software engineers, providing technical assistance and direction as needed
  • Maintains high standards of software quality in accordance with Platform Software Development Playbook and established industry best practices. Contribute your knowledge and experience to improve Platform engineering practices.
  • Identifies and encourage areas for growth and improvement within the team.
  • Guide the team to develop a structured application/interface code, new program documentation, operations documentation and user guides in a casual, flexible environment
  • Communicate with end users and internal customers to help direct development, debugging, and testing of application software for accuracy, integrity, interoperability, and completeness
  • Lead development of new functionality and applications on cross-functional Agile project teams
  • Performs integrated testing and customer acceptance testing of components that requires careful planning and execution to ensure timely, quality results.
  • Employee is also responsible for performing other job duties as assigned by Caterpillar management from time to time.

Basic qualifications:

  • Position requires a four-year degree from an accredited college or university.
  • 8 years or more of enterprise software development experience or at least 6 years of experience with master’s degree in computer science or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience leading software engineering teams and projects in cloud-based environments.
  • 8 years or more of experience in designing and developing software services and applications in Java or at least three years of experience in Java with master’s degree in computer science or related field. Python experience a plus.
  • 3+ years of cloud experience (AWS, Azure, or others)
  • 2+ years of experience with CI/CD and DevOps technologies such as Azure DevOps Code Pipeline, Jenkins, shell scripts, etc. and an Agile software development methodology.

Top candidates will also have:

  • Experience coding HTML 5, CSS3, JavaScript and Web components using front-end frameworks (React / Angular)
  • Proven experience in many of the following,
    • Designing, developing, deploying and maintaining software at scale in AWS or Azure.
    • Developing software applications using relational and NoSQL databases.
    • Application architectural patterns, such as MVC, Microservices, Event-driven, etc.
    • Working within an Agile framework (ideally Scrum and Kanban).
    • Using infrastructure-as-code to build, test, and deploy software using CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GoCD, Azure DevOps etc. Working knowledge of code quality, static and dynamic security testing tools.
  • Strong understanding and/or experience in many of the following,
    • Message brokers such as Kafka, AWS SQS, AWS SNS, AWS Kinesis, Apache ActiveMQ, RabbitMQ.
    • Datastores such as MySQL, Postgres, DynamoDB, Redis, Elasticsearch.
    • Batch or stream processing systems such as Apache Spark, Flink, Akka, Storm.
    • Experience designing well-defined Restful APIs, and writing API proxies on platforms such as Apigee Edge, AWS API Gateway or Azure API Gateway.
    • Hands on experience with API tools such as Swagger, Postman and Assertible.
    • Hands on experience with TDD/BDD test automation and tools such as Cucumber integrated into CI/CD pipelines.
    • Debugging and maintaining software in Linux or Unix platforms.
  • Passion for technology and an eagerness to contribute to a team-oriented environment.
  • Solid knowledge of computer science fundamentals including design patterns, data structures and algorithms.
  • Ability to work under pressure and within time constraints taking responsibility for your team.
  • Experience leading and working with on- and offshore engineering teams.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer science or Electrical engineering or related field is required
  • AWS and/or Azure Cloud Certifications recommended
