This position is located in Long Beach, California.As a Propulsion Design Engineer you will be an integral part of the Boeing Commercial Airplanes team supporting all Boeing models both in development and in airline service, including programs such as the 737 MAX, 747-8, 767, 777X, 787, Out of Production airplanes, and future airplane development. The Southern California (SoCal) Propulsion team offers the opportunity to work on integration, installation, design, analysis, and troubleshooting on all aspects of the Propulsion Auxiliary Power System (APS).The Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA) Southern California Engineering Design Center integrates three core businesses: Boeing Global Services - Aftermarket Modifications & Freighter Conversions, Airplane Programs, and Customer Support. In this particular role you will be working on a variety of items such as assessing and resolving product /process issues for the auxiliary power system through the product life-cycle. This requisition is for an Auxiliary Power Systems (APS) design engineer lead responsible for system requirements, design, qualification, and certification. Position Responsibilities:

  • Leads definition of requirements for propulsion systems and auxiliary power system.
  • Leads definition, coordination and control of the functional and physical interfaces between the propulsion system and the vehicle.
  • Leads development of specifications and architectural and configuration concepts for associated vehicle systems to meet customer and regulatory requirements.
  • Leads configuration and design of propulsion sub-systems and components to meet all vehicle design and performance criteria.
  • Leads the use of various testing, analysis, modeling and simulation tools to estimate or calculate system performance.
  • Leads the definition and performance of certification tests for propulsion sub-systems and components.
  • Leads support of fielded systems by developing responses to customer queries and providing technical recommendations.
  • Leads development of concepts for future propulsion systems to meet anticipated requirements.
  • Interface with suppliers and external partners to drive successful collaborations on Propulsion change projects
  • Coordinate with internal partners such as Propulsion Stress, Engine Management, Flight Test, Service Engineering to meet project goals and schedules successfully
  • Lead technical Interchange meetings with suppliers and partners such as the Auxiliary Power Systems manufacturer
  • Communicate project status, risks, issues, and opportunities to Propulsion and Program Leadership
  • Partner with other engineering disciplines to provide technical solutions and troubleshooting of the propulsion system for customers
  • Works under minimal direction.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a "US Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. "US Person" includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee. Employer will not sponsor applicants for employment visa status.Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in an engineering or science related field
  • 5+ years of experience in aerospace and mechanical design engineering

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Knowledge of Aircraft Design, systems engineering, Model Based Engineering, system integration, requirements management, propulsion engineering, and turbo machinery
  • Experience with air-breathing propulsion areas, such as inlets, engines and exhaust systems, and the integration of the total propulsion system within a vehicle
  • Understanding Project Management.
  • Good knowledge of Troubleshooting.

Typical Education/Experience:Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience).
