About you:

Does aggressively tackling ambitious 10x cross disciplinary projects from early conceptual stages through full field deployment sound like the way you want to spend your time?  Do you cut short circular discussions to run a test or demonstration instead of scheduling another meeting?   At Zipline your work is intended for the field, customers are counting on it today,  so there is no time for ambiguous communication or aiming low.  If  building a team, growing the people you work for at twice the rate of  typical “years” of experience, and leveraging your technical skills to drive 2-5x increased scalability in the first 3 months appeals to you, read on.

Zipline believes access to medical care should not depend on your GPS coordinates. We are at the forefront of a logistics revolution, using autonomous aircraft to deliver just-in-time, lifesaving medical supplies on 3 continents around the world right now, 7 days a week.  Are you interested in building a system that 200 million people will depend on with their lives?

Responsibilities:

As a technical leader and senior member of the Mechanical Engineering team you will continue to develop and push a passionate high commitment high initiative culture.  You will be respected for your technical skill, hands on bias to action, and discipline to close projects into production.  You untangle a twisted knot of ambiguous, missing, and contested requirements into a clear, but not likely straight line, path to your top line objectives using creativity, unorthodox methods, and clear tradeoffs.  In this role you solve complex problems  with little direction, defining the top level rally points, managing schedule, mitigating risks, and building the team all while ensuring the smallest details of screw color or corner radius are delivering your customers an elegant solution.  You have the freedom and autonomy to make it happen, you have the responsibility for everything that the team does or does not do.

Qualifications:

Must have Project Experience

  • 5 years minimum of direct product development experience - design & build to print
  • Experience on a mission driven team, passionate high commitment high initiative environment
  • Capable of solving complex multidisciplinary technical problems with little supervision on schedule as an individual or as a member of an integrated team
  • Full life cycle development of new hardware systems - revolutionary, not evolutionary approaches with small incremental updates to hardware
  • Team builder:  Hiring, coaching, and mentoring high caliber teammates, including those better than you in their craft

Must have Technical Experience

  • Prior experience deploying hardware to the field, owning the full hardware product development, concept through production
  • Trusted technical expert in design, manufacturing, or analysis for high and low volume methods - Plastic injection molding, casting, composites, assembly methods
  • Strong fundamentals and ability to size and outline loads with pen and paper
  • Excellent communication, written, verbal, and visual
  • Ability to synthesize elegant solutions from disparate industries like aerospace, consumer electronics, medical, or construction

Nice to Have - one or more specific areas of knowledge below

  • FEA expertise applied towards product design
  • GD&T experience applied to specific manufacturing method capabilities and best practices
  • Mechanisms experience designing elegant multi axis solutions
  • Familiarity with designing for high voltage system including PCBA integration, thermal management, and packaging
  • Familiarity with designing thermal systems including thermal circuit modeling, component sizing and layout
  • Extensive prototyping experience making products real
