The Vehicle Motion and Embedded Controls (VMEC) organization is looking for a Lead Execution Engineer who will be responsible for the development of a brake, steering, suspension, or driveline family of electronic controllers that meets vehicle program deliverables. These deliverables include key targets and expectations for component safety, quality, program timeliness, and budget.
The Lead Execution Engineer role is a blend of program engineering management and advanced technical development leadership. You will be expected to bring solution leadership through your work experience to resolve highly complex problems during the development and production life of a controller. The Lead Execution Engineer will be responsible for proactively managing component shortages due to supply chain issues borne out of the current global semiconductor crisis. Your responsibilities will also include leading and developing strategic solutions to achieve business goals for component problem resolution, vehicle safety, warranty cost, quality, and service.
This Role Offers the Following Work Appropriately Strategy:
Hybrid - this position does not require an employee to be onsite full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired
About VMEC
Our organization is at the center of any technology that enables the vehicle to move, turn and stop. VMEC is responsible for the development and deployment of complex embedded controllers specific to propulsion and chassis control systems utilizing the principles of the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe). These controllers support cutting edge features, such active safety, autonomous, trailer braking, crab walk. The race is on to deliver engaging, meaningful in-vehicle experiences! This space is ripe with technical leadership opportunities for advanced technology development, as well as the ability to provide mentorship for new employees. You can flex your teamwork muscles as you will be tasked with working with several other areas of engineering and business units.
The main activities of the role are:
Chassis Domain Controller Management

  • Single point for a chassis domain specific family of control modules
  • Manage engineering direction and decisions for component shortages and changes
  • Lead weekly commodity technical workgroup meeting
  • Review and approve GM specification deviations
  • Lead due diligence and resolution of safety related problem caseload
  • Update best practices, peer review checklists, standards and specifications as learnings are found during execution
  • Controller semiconductor tracking and BOM maintenance
  • Technical expert of the software validation plan for functional, diagnostic, and remedial actions
  • Lead Figure of Merit data analysis during program development
  • Support Feature Owner and Feature Function Engineer to develop and maintain feature and functional requirements
  • Serve as liaison for global engineering groups
  • Provide support to Field Investigators in Open Investigation Review (OIR)
  • Develop controller service strategy with GM Customer Care and Aftersales

Team Development

  • Oversee the training and development of new Design Release Engineers (DRE) and support workload management with product owner and management

Partner/Supplier Management

  • Assure Peer Reviews and DFMEAs are conducted per process of engineering
  • Coordinate Product Change Evaluations (PCE) and supplier Change Notice (CN) implementation
  • Supplier implementation of GM defined diagnostics strategy
  • Lead supplier visits to ensure manufacturing readiness
  • Support GM buyer by vetting costs from supplier
  • Lead monthly warranty reviews with supplier


Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science degree in one of the following: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics
  • Knowledge of and minimum 8 years of hands-on experience in engineering complex embedded systems
  • DRE experience with embedded electronic components
  • High level of competence in writing and comprehending software requirements
  • Working knowledge of automotive components and system level test plans, including EMC testing
  • High level understanding of hardware and software design and failure modes in electronic modules and verification/validation processes
  • Experienced in performing system, sub-system, software, and component level DFMEAs
  • Understanding of engineering theory and principles of operation of mechanical/electrical mechanisms
  • High level of analytical ability where problems are complex and difficult to solve
  • Demonstrated proficiency in project management


Desired Skills and Qualifications

  • Master's degree in an engineering field
  • Direct experience with automotive safety critical systems
  • Expert knowledge and experience in vehicle chassis electronic systems: Mechatronics & Microcontroller Architectures and Associated Technology, Vehicle Communications: CAN, GMLAN, & LIN, OBD-II diagnostics, Automotive Safety Integrity Levels (ASIL), Vehicle Cybersecurity, Product Design, Release, and Development Cycles
  • Experience in the GM component specification and release process
  • DFSS Black Belt certification
