The MongoDB community is transforming industries and empowering developers to build amazing apps that people use every day. We are the leading modern data platform and the first database provider to IPO in over 20 years. Join our team and be at the forefront of innovation and creativity.

Developer Productivity is a group of engineering teams that work closely with engineers across the organization in delivering a one-of-a-kind, cross-cloud scale, increasingly performant, and notoriously popular data platform. Developer Productivity creates innovative developer tools and systems to solve some of the toughest challenges related to engineering: CI/CD, Code Analytics, Distributed Systems Verification, Test Fuzzing,  Reproducibility and Debuggability, Test Minimization, and more. These solutions and more enable Engineering to continuously innovate and deliver with confidence to our customers.

We're looking for a Lead Engineer to research and develop tools for our flagship C++ codebase that drives deep insights into quality and productivity, and accelerates the development of our popular MongoDB Database. The lead role includes managing 2-4 engineers and working in a highly collaborative environment with our database engineering team. This individual should be enthusiastic to explore both solutions we can develop in-house as well as working with industry/academia to implement novel ideas.

Our ideal candidate will have

  • 5+ years of experience combined in developing production software at scale working on building frameworks and backend systems
  • Relevant experience mentoring engineers and taking technical lead of projects
  • Deep interest in developing their leadership skills and developing the careers of the members of the team
  • Appreciation for the challenges developers face building distributed systems, query processing, and/or cloud platforms
  • Experience working with remote teams

Responsibilities

  • Designing quality software using cutting-edge technologies to solve hard problems
  • Manage a small team of individual contributors, responsible for ensuring their success, aiding their career growth, and facilitating their technical work
  • Participate in hiring for the team
  • Build relationships with users who are other engineers in the company across many departments and disciplines
  • A few times of travel a year may be necessary to meet with other team members and attend conferences

Success Measures

  • In the first month, you'll have a high-level understanding of the developer experience at MongoDB and can map proposed areas of improvement to current pain points. You'll also understand the details of work by some engineers on the team across 2 - 3 projects
  • Within 3 months, you will have successfully contributed to the design/POC/prototype of two features and development of one feature and have one-on-ones with engineers on the above projects
  • Within 6 months, you will have a small number of engineers on your team and understand the strengths, growth areas, and career aspirations of every individual. You will also work with users to plan the next set of projects
  • In 12 months, you'll have led the development of multiple new features and performed a full cycle of performance and growth conversations with team members. Additionally, you'll have meaningfully contributed to the vision and product roadmap of your team
