Description
As the Group Leader for 12/48V Battery Lab Systems Engineering you will report to the Electric Power Senior Manager and oversees the Lab Engineering team that directly supports the development of current and future battery technologies within General Motors' Electric Power portfolio. The Group Leader role will require a strong combination of both a technical and people leader skills and offers people leader experience in the growing field of vehicle electrification.
This team specializes in the safe and orderly preparation and testing of 12/48V batteries and related components within a laboratory environment. Our battery testing facility operates 24/7 with only one shift of personnel. The facility has battery testing capabilities including traditional environmental testing as well as exploratory development testing on cutting edge GM-invented new technologies. The lab and results it produces are used by other GM engineers working on advanced battery technologies and electrified vehicles, in support of the vision of a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion.
What you will do:

  • Serve as the single point contact to internal and external stakeholders for all Electric Power Group Lab planning and activities such as resource planning, test system development and commissioning, operating, calibration and safety procedures
  • Interface with Electric Power new technology project technical leads and Electric Power group engineers to ensure that the lab is ready to provide the required testing services and equipment at the required time
  • Manage projects, test scheduling, maintenance & calibration scheduling, resource status reporting and resource allocation tracking for all battery lab activities, and proactively identify and escalate roadblocks
  • Manage the test automation software release process, help define milestone content and strategy, ensuring plans to meet timing requirements are safe and appropriate, understood and agreed upon by all stakeholders
  • Manage team workload, help estimate timing, and setting priorities and balance tasks across the team
  • Allocate and schedule testing resources and people and regularly report out test results and status to all battery lab customers
  • Act as a technical resource to the team in all aspects of test scripting and application development including estimation, analysis, design, programming, integration testing and debugging
  • Maintain awareness of latest testing equipment and methods and evaluate them for adoption into the lab, championing innovation projects to integrate new technologies
  • Lead and support projects that specify, source, engineer, integrate, install, and commission new test equipment
  • Understand and oversee capital and maintenance expenses including forecasts
  • Function as a subject matter expert in the G-Risk, G-Comply, Management of Change, and Contractor Safety Management processes pertaining to test equipment
  • Act as a technical resource to internal and supplier teams in all aspects of lab systems engineering, including new technologies
  • Identify and Manage outsourcing needs for external test labs and engineering resources, as needed
  • Ability to create, launch, and manage a preventative equipment maintenance system and related plans
  • Maintain awareness of the product forecast within the broader Product Development community and own planning for the future as it relates to test equipment and related methods to ensure future products can be tested safely, on-time, and with quality.
  • Manage the Electric Power vehicle fleet test scheduling, maintenance scheduling, resource status reporting and resource allocation tracking
  • Ensure vehicles are in a good operating condition and proper training resources for test vehicles are available for drivers.
  • Ensure vehicles are assigned drivers and being utilized to meet data collection needs for the Electric Power Team.
  • Champion safe test setup for battery assemblies and related components. This includes defining and performing procedures and checks to ensure test results are delivered on-time and with quality prior to bench release.
  • Develop and manufacture special purpose instrumentation, cable and wiring assemblies, laboratory test equipment, and fixtures related to testing of battery assemblies or related components
  • Responsible for analysis of test results and communicating summarized test findings
  • Develop, implement, and sustain workplace organization practices as it relates to logistics and material handling
  • Perform official people leader functions including training, team skillset improvements, coaching, performance feedback, and staffing
  • Maintain good labor relations when interfacing with unionized dock personnel


Additional Description
What you will need:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • 5 year of Experience with laboratory test equipment, measuring and recording devices used in the testing of batteries or similar products
  • Knowledge of Lead Acid and Li-Ion Battery systems and safe work practices
  • Documentation experience writing clear lab procedures and safety pre-test checklists
  • Ability to read system engineering schematics and understand electronic / electrical functionality
  • Working knowledge with test automation systems used in the testing of batteries or similar products
  • Experience working with equipment suppliers and installation contractors
  • Ability to understand, utilize and debug common networking protocols, e.g. TCP, UDP, IP, mail slots, CAN, LIN, RS232, Ethernet
  • Demonstrated ability to work and lead with a high level of autonomy in a complex, multi-project, multi-disciplinary environment, with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of lead acid and Li-Ion battery chemistry testing with ability to turn data into information


Preferred

  • Previous people leader and/or project leader experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or Computer Science and master's degree
  • Experience working with equipment suppliers and installation contractors
  • Ability to design and implement algorithms to automate tasks on new and existing technologies
  • Programming of test automation systems, e.g. AND iTest, AVL Lynx, LabView, TestStand
  • Prior use of common automotive debug and data acquisition tools, e.g. CANalyzer, VehicleSpy, INCA/MDA
  • Working knowledge of high-level programming languages, e.g. C, C++, C#, Java, Python, LABVIEW, MATLAB
  • Experience with measurement techniques, sensor technologies and data collection devices (e.g. NEOVI or other DAQs) to create non- or minimally intrusive measurement storage
  • Experience with equipment maintenance processes in a fast-paced, industrial setting
  • Knowledge of traditional product development, validation and release timing, milestones and methodologies
  • Experience working in an ISO 17025 or ISO 9001 accredited environment
  • Strong awareness of and experience with Safety as it pertains to batteries and electrical system components, including ATW DVUL-3
  • Mounting and cooling experience with mid-voltage batteries, APMs and programmable devices
  • Knowledge of and experience with battery, APM, programmable devices, and system level debugging and test procedure coding and interpretation of results
