USA TODAY Graphics is searching for a Graphics Developer to join their two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning team.

You will work alongside a close-knit and dedicated crew of talented visual journalists telling stories that matter to readers, using the web as their medium. In this role you will work with other members of the team to develop novel story forms and critical infrastructure as well as reporting and publishing tools. You will develop new storytelling techniques for a variety of subjects and approaches: breaking news, visual investigations, explanatory graphics, data visualizations, and ambitious projects. Your work will help inform people all over the world. It may even save some lives.

We are seeking someone who can build anything and enjoys a good challenge. Our work is often the tip of the spear when it comes to storytelling innovation in our company. When we figure out things that work, we create systems and tools that make them easier to do it again, and for less technical people to use. Once we have something that we like, we often collaborate with our newsroom tools and product teams to make them available to even more users.

We often work on our own stories, but we also love working with partners at USA TODAY and the hundreds of local newsrooms in our network. You will have the space to dig into the stories you care about most, and a collaborative team to help you rise to your full potential. We love it when people bring their unique interests into our work, whether it be astronomy, sports, stocks, video games, wildlife, or anything else that makes you happy.

We think this is one of the best teams in journalism. We take our mission and culture seriously, but we have a lot of fun. We truly enjoy our jobs, respect each other, and maintain a strong core of people who have been working together for years - a rarity in an industry that can feel like a game of musical chairs.

This position requires the ability to work collaboratively and independently in a sometimes hectic and changing newsroom environment. It also requires navigating multiple changing platforms. A sense of humor can't hurt. We are looking for the right person, not a set of abilities, so if you think you would be a good fit, we encourage you to apply even if you do not have all the skills listed.

  • Build and maintain critical infrastructure using the latest development operations approaches.
  • Research, design, and build systems and tools to help us get our work done.
  • Monitor world news as well as evolving industry concepts and methods.

Requirements:

  • Passion for the intersection of news, data, technology and design.
  • Excellent collaboration and communications skills.
  • Advanced technical ability including:
    • Development and presentation skills (e.g., Mapbox, D3, WebGL.)
    • Client and server-side development approaches (e.g., Svelte, NodeJS, Python.)
    • Automation, virtualization, and development operations (e.g., Kubernetes, Docker, Google Cloud.)
    • Database experience (e.g., SQL, Postgres, Neo4J.)

Helpful, but not required:

  • Experience with data analysis languages/methods (e.g., Python, R, QGIS, statistical analysis.)
  • Other visual skills (e.g., motion graphics, illustration, interaction design, 3D modeling.)
  • User research and product skills: you need to understand your users to build good tools.
  • Experience with open-source intelligence, spatial analysis, and other investigative approaches.
  • Experience collaborating across departments including social, visual, and/or graphics teams.
