Who we are & why we’re hiring

Twilio powers real-time business communications and data solutions that help companies and developers worldwide build better applications and customer experiences.

Although we're headquartered in San Francisco, we have presence throughout Europe, Asia and Australia. We're on a journey to becoming a globally anti-racist, anti-oppressive, anti-bias company that actively opposes racism and all forms of oppression and bias. At Twilio, we support diversity, equity & inclusion wherever we do business. We employ thousands of Twilions worldwide, and we're looking for more builders, creators, and visionaries to help fuel our growth momentum.

About the job

The Serverless team develops and operates on AWS’s Serverless portfolio, including Lambda, S3 and, SQS. We enable our customers to innovate rather than think about infrastructure, capacity management, and operating system updates. With our serverless model, we make application development enjoyable, minimize operational work, and help customers to build more of their business logic on Twilio. The Serverless team is responsible for operating and improving some of Twilio's most popular existing products such as TwiML Bins, Functions and Assets as well as exploring new opportunities to allow our customers to succeed without building their own infrastructure.

This role is for you, if:

  • You like to think at scale - designing, developing and operating production applications and services that are scalable within the organization and that meet goals of low latency, and high availability.
  • You love to write code with a test driven approach and take great pride in the quality, resilience and performance of your code.
  • You’re not afraid to be experimental and scrappy to help the team make informed data-driven decisions
  • You bring experience with complex distributed systems, are comfortable with multiple programming languages and enjoy exploring and learning new programming patterns.

Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll:

  • DRAW THE OWL: Work alongside a small and collaborative team, white-board ideas, build new solutions as well as constantly improve discovery for Twilio's top products to generate significant revenue
  • WEAR THE CUSTOMERS’ SHOES: Put yourself in the customers’ shoes by talking to them and understand how they use Twilio
  • RUTHLESS PRIORITIZATION: Work with a PM and EM to influence product roadmaps and sprints
  • EMPOWER OTHERS: Review code and offer improvements to coding practices and processes to impact the larger organization

Qualifications

Not all applicants will have skills that match a job description exactly. Twilio values diverse experiences in other industries, and we encourage everyone who meets the required qualifications to apply. While having “desired” qualifications make for a strong candidate, we encourage applicants with alternative experiences to also apply. If your career is just starting or hasn't followed a traditional path, don't let that stop you from considering Twilio. We are always looking for people who will bring something new to the table!

Required:

  • 4+ years of developing business-critical web-based services or application
  • Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree, preferably in CS, or equivalent experience
  • Experience building applications that delight customers and the developers working on them
  • Experience with JavaScript, Node.js, TypeScript, React (or similar frameworks), and CSS
  • Deep knowledge of at least one server-side language, and some experience with object-oriented programming
  • Well versed (and opinionated) on what makes a good REST API
  • Effectively communicate technical designs verbally and/or in writing for small to medium sized technical audiences
  • Experience designing, developing and operating large-scale distributed systems
  • An entrepreneurial mindset, willing to use data as the best way to make engineering and product decisions.
  • Excellent collaborator. Ability to foster alignment cross-functionally and cross-organizationally
