About Take Command Health
Take Command Health is a start-up on a mission to improve the healthcare system, starting with health insurance. Pragmatically speaking, we help employers reimburse employees for individual insurance instead of offering a traditional one-size-fits-all group plan. We believe this model can empower employees (when they have the right support) to be savvy healthcare consumers and have a transformative impact on the entire healthcare system.

Let’s be honest—health insurance is usually a confusing, frustrating, and even emotional experience for people. We want to fix that with a new model, great technology, and a superior user experience. We have made a great start, but we need your help to fully realize our long-term vision.

About the Full-Stack Developer Role

By joining Take Command you will be joining a cutting edge health insurance start-up that truly lives out it's core values (see below). Join a tight-knit, mission driven team that tackles real problems for real people in healthcare. We are looking for someone that loves a good challenge and wants to collaborate with the team to help people find the healthcare they need. People’s health and their families’ health is important and we want to make setting that up easy and straightforward. As a part of the dev team, you will be building the framework for both our clients and our team to succeed. You will be a pillar on our development team as we grow and make our product the best product on the market!

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Implement quality code across the stack using design patterns and development best practices
  • Mentor junior developers on design patterns, development best practices, and career growth
  • Participate in code reviews
  • Take ownership of deliverables and their quality
  • Participate in Sprint planning and grooming sessions
  • Focus not only on what needs to be built but why something needs to be built
  • Work with cross-functional teams (product, sales, client success, marketing, business development, design, etc.) to gather feedback and improve platform

Technical skills and qualifications:

  • 3+ years of professional experience in software development
  • Product Development Methodologies: Lean startup, Agile
  • Fundamental front-end languages: HTML, CSS, JavaScript
  • JavaScript frameworks: React (preferred), Angular, Vue
  • Server-side languages: Python / Django (preferred), Ruby, .NET, Java
  • Database technologies: SQL, migrations, Object-relational mappers (ORMs)

We’re looking for a great teammate
Great products are built by great teams. We’re eager to partner with someone that can use their knowledge, skills, and experience to make all of us—and our product—better.

  • Passion for what you do: We know…how exciting can health insurance really be? The reality is our clients love us because we make something that is frustrating, easy and straightforward and, um…kind of fun! We get excited about that! That’s how we made it this far and we enjoy the company of people who care about the problems we’re solving.
  • Attention to detail…: The importance of this for our data-driven product is hard to overstate, and we take pride in improvements large and small. We’re also talking about people’s health, money, and well-being, so we want to be right.
  • Appreciation of testing, rapid prototypes, and pivots: Software is complicated and we’re tackling complex problems for our users. Also, you’ve probably noticed from the news that the health insurance industry we’re innovating in is pretty fluid right now. We don’t expect everything you do to work perfectly or last forever. Be prepared to iterate on the fly. We’ll look to you to help us strike the right balance between market research, testing, and our desire to launch and experiment with exciting new products and features.

Perks
At Take Command Health, we’re excited to build a team and culture that reflects our values. While we work hard to solve difficult problems, we believe strongly in a healthy work-life balance. We offer plenty of employee benefits as continue our mission to support our employees overall.

  • A generously funded ICHRA that can be used for premiums (medical, dental, vision – whatever you need) and medical expenses. You get to use our own product and we think that’s so exciting and rare!
  • We offer unlimited personal vacation with only very minor restrictions (we need you to coordinate with your department and to be available during Open Enrollment)
  • You’ll get your own company card with a small budget to pay for treats when you meet with team members, etc. Plus, our CEO will always invite you to lunch (and will often pay!).
  • Adding a member to your family is a huge deal, we offer paid parental leave for new parents.
  • We have a beautiful office conveniently located near The Hill (Walnut Hill & 75). The kitchen is stocked (with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks). Plus, we’ve designed the space to have lots of different areas so you can work lounged on the couch or standing near your colleagues or holed up in a phone room. Of course, you’ll also get your own desk, too.
  • We offer a technology stipend so you can purchase your own equipment and then keep it after you leave (so long as you’ve worked with us for at least 3 months). You’ll get some more added each year to make sure your equipment is up-to-date. Use it on any technology you need to do your job – laptop, headphones, monitor, new phone. The only thing you can’t use it on is recurring fees (like your cellphone bill).
  • Struggling with childcare for the day? Our office is kid-friendly and we even have a closet full of toys so you don’t have to make tough choices about how to manage your day. Just need to hole up in your comfy clothes and churn through some projects? We have always been flexible on where you work – we hope to see you around the office a few times a week but we also aren’t keeping tabs on when you work from the office and when you work from home.

There’s plenty of other fun perks, too. From swag to happy hours and even the fun bonus from time-to-time we work hard to offer a great environment where you want to work!
