JOB DUTIES:
The Engineering Specialist within the Advanced Power Products team will provide technical leadership to the lab execution team to help deliver power conversion and power systems products for APP. This is a hands-on role including daily engagement to the development facilities, test process development and documentation, and issue resolution and support. There are other expectations within this role to include: advanced testing process development, complex issue leadership, and mentorship for the junior members of the APP development team. The products assigned to this engineer align with Caterpillar machine electrification and advanced power generation system, which include off board chargers, on board chargers, DC converters and Battery and Fuel Cell inverters. The NPI(New Product Introduction) programs requiring this function align with Caterpillar's Expanded Offering objective along with supporting customers ESG goals through the availability of zero emissions power systems products.
In addition, as a Performance/Simulation/Application engineer, you will be responsible for leading system level simulations that aid in product selection that meets performance expectations. You will work closely with APP India simulation team and other process partners such as power electronics components and control team. You will contribute on product quality, reliability, and performance deliverables associated with complex engineering systems. The systems could include but not limited to energy storage systems, fuel cell power system, microgrid and electric/hybrid machine system.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Manage power conversion system simulations using modeling tools such as Matlab Simulink, Dynasty, HOMER Pro and other commercial grid simulation tools, such as Digsilent and PSCAD.
- Experience with Modbus/TCP, CAN, J1939 and other data link communications
- Hands-on experience with electrical / electronic control systems / wireless communications.
- Lead and manage FMEA and validation activities within the NPI process.
- Collaborate with development teams to drive critical customer requirements, develop validation plans based on risk priority numbers, report or in some cases lead problem resolutions.
- Manage test plan development and system/software validation activities
- Develop new validation processes and tools to improve team velocity and quality
Basic Qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering.
- At least 8 years' experience in design, simulation, analysis and testing.
- Safety-first mindset
- Design and integration experience
- System modeling and correlation experiences.
- Hands-on experience with electrical / electronic control systems / wireless communications.
- Understanding of genset and power conversion systems
Top Candidates will also have
- Master's degree on Power Electronics with 5+ years of relevant industry experience
- Control system development experience
- System simulation and correlation experience using multiple tools (Matlab Simulink, Dynasty, HOMER Pro and other commercial grid simulation tools, such as Digsilent and PSCAD)
- In depth analytics using Vector CANape / CANalyzer / ASAP2
- Experience with Caterpillar internal tools (Electronic Technician, CADeT, DATk, Supercomm 2)
- Experience with field troubleshooting (mechanical, electrical, or software issues)
- Experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) Simulation and Validation tools and processes
- Previous A&I, customer service, or DTO experience is a plus
- Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Emphasis on initiative and self-starting tasks
