Hydraulic Excavators (HEX) are a robotic arm on tracks making them the most popular & most versatile piece of construction equipment on the job site. The technology age for HEX is in its infancy and Caterpillar is leading the charge in taking Excavators to new levels of technology, automation, and electrification enabling system efficiencies.
This Robotics & Autonomous Controls System Engineering Specialist role in Caterpillar's Excavation Division (EXD) is focused on the delivering next generation of robotics/automation control features and system efficiency breakthroughs to take the industry to the next levels of productivity, safety, and efficiency. The work will include design and delivery of the next generation system improvements and advanced control software across the EXD product lineup including hydraulic excavators, forestry products, material handlers, and work tools. The candidate will participate in the design, development, integration, and testing of machine control systems impacting base machine performance/efficiency, tool control systems for expanded versatility, and autonomous or semi-autonomous control features.
Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

• Develop machine control systems for improving base machine performance/efficiency, tool control systems for expanded versatility, and autonomous or semi-autonomous control features
• Develop machine control software to optimize the next generation hydraulic systems, electrification systems, and/or work tool versatility projects
• Gather machine requirements from external and internal customers/operators, process partners, and regulatory teams
• Lead New Product Introduction (NPI) and Annual Product Update (APU) activities to implement solutions from concept through production
• Perform on-machine development activities to meet machine level performance and feature design targets, at Caterpillar Proving Grounds and occasionally at customer sites
• Utilize model based development tools, such as Matlab/Simulink to perform controls system and software design and development
• Utilize on machine development and data acquisition tools such as CANape to verify and tune hardware/software functionality
• Maintain technology alignment while working across a diverse EXD product portfolio

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelors degree in Engineering, Computer Science or a related 4-year technical degree
• 8+ years of experience working with embedded control systems, hydraulics components, or embedded software (Matlab/Simulink)
• Must have strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to communicate technical information effectively to a culturally diverse work group
• Must have the ability to identify critical gaps/actions and act to resolve issues with minimal oversight

Top candidates will also have:

• Experience developing and testing embedded control systems solutions
• Experience with electrohydraulics such as implements and hydrostatic systems
• Experience working with heavy equipment and understanding how customers/operators utilize our equipment in various applications
• An advanced degree in an Engineering or Computer Science related field
