Job Duties:
This position will be accountable for leading the research and evaluation of advanced battery chemistries and technologies. The incumbent will be expected to seek out current and future offerings to improve the safety, cost, reliability/durability, and performance of Caterpillar Battery Systems and to drive the analysis and evaluation of those technologies through rigor of the NTI Process. Responsibilities include working closely with battery team members, lab/validation personnel, and suppliers to evaluate the capability and applicability of the technologies. Other responsibilities include developing/refining evaluation processes, creating physics-based models to characterize battery technologies, and providing project reviews for management and peers.
The key role of an Engineering Specialist is that of an experienced individual contributor to projects or assignments that are sufficiently large and complex as to often be shared with one or two other engineers and/or technologists. This position will be accountable for identification, analysis and resolution of needs and problems in discipline for which the incumbent is gaining a reputation as an expert. In addition to demonstrating technical expertise, a person in this position may be called on to act as a team and/or project leader. But major focus is on technical delivery. Direct work with other units, suppliers, customers, dealers and teams require the incumbent demonstrate skill in negotiation, building consensus and achieving compromise. Impact of decisions made by this position may be far-reaching, to include the project team or immediate work group, division and/or business unit, suppliers, internal and external customers, and Caterpillar markets. Decisions may significantly impact: product performance, durability, reliability, quality, and serviceability; warranty; total cost of non-quality; patents; products or processes; technology; costs; sales; and customer perceptions, as well as how technology is applied.
Success factors for the Engineering Specialist are strong communication skills, an understanding of customers' needs and product and process application, and ability to manage priorities. Major challenges facing incumbents are keeping up-to-date with technology, developing increased technical breadth and/or depth of one's own specialty, being very innovative yet able to convert concepts to reality, beginning to think strategically, and paying attention to business needs. Responsibilities of this position demand that the incumbent understand complex technical problems and demonstrate the ability to develop creative solutions. Technical leadership skills are essential. Though the focus of the job is technical contribution, project management skills may be required.
Engineers must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of technology. This position must develop increased technical breadth and/or depth at this level, as well as gaining increased business management skills. Additional key skills at this level include development of acceptance criteria, new product introduction process, practical application of theory, ability to select appropriate tools and methodologies, manufacturing and quality processes and communication skills.
Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 15 years of engineering experience or...
  • Master's Degree with a minimum of 9 years of engineering experience or...
  • Doctorate Degree with a minimum of 3 years of engineering experience
  • Strong experience with batteries and battery systems
  • Battery performance and degradation modeling experience


Top Candidates will also have:

  • Strong battery test, characterization, and validation experience
  • Battery research, prototyping and/or manufacturing experience
  • Familiar with industry standards and guidelines
  • NTI Process experience
  • Demonstrated history of being a self-starter with strong technical leadership skills
  • Solid communication and collaboration skills

  • Up to 10% Travel.
